Old Brown Dog has been cited as a classic example of the “American Brown Ale” style of beer. Compared to a typical English Brown Ale, Old Brown Dog is fuller-bodied and more strongly hopped.
Old Brown Dog has been around for many years. It was first brewed in 1988 at the Northampton Brewery. In 1989 it won a silver medal in its category (American Brown Ale) at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. It has since been retired from competition but enjoys love and respect from people all over the world.

Decent brown ale that mixes some hoppiness with some sweetness. Perhaps a little too fizzy at points near the end. A good solid ale.

Bottle. Good aroma. Piney hops, malty and a touch of caramel. Good, balanced flavor. Some bitter hoppiness balanced out with the malty sweetness. Throw in some hazelnut, brown sugar and chocolate, and it’s pretty good.

Nice balance of malt and bitter. Nicely drinkable. Tad of roast, chocolate malts, cocoa. Some nuts, and smooth - malts and some hops

UPDATED: SEP 29, 2005 Not a bad brew, but everything about it is mild - the soft malty aroma, the sweet caramel & coffee taste, the gently bitter finish. Good looking reddish-brown color. This would be a good session ale or a nice with a meal.

Been a fan of this brew since I first tried it a few years back. A good beer to drink by itself with it’s undertones of coffee and slightly burnt carmel. A nice round flavor. Also I prefer their brewery tour over the mass market Red Hook one on the other side of town. Wish this and other Smuttynose brews were easier to find on the west coast when I go see friends.

[on tap at Sunset Grill and Tap] Clear brown with a nice, elevated ring of fine bubbles that lasted. Floral hop aroma with some pleasant coffee and malt. Toffee-caramel flavour with some notes of coffee and gentle hops. Very clean finish, but a little weak. Light to medium body--not as thin as expected. Very little carbonation. I liked this beer and would definitely have it agian.

Sweet, spicy aroma. Pours a perfect medium brown with zero lacing and just the right amount of carbonation. Flavor is sweet, slightly hoppy with hints of caramel and grain. Palate comes on smooth and unfolds on the tongue with an excellent finish. I love this ale.
