Old Brown Dog has been cited as a classic example of the "American Brown Ale" style of beer. Compared to a typical English Brown Ale, Old Brown Dog is fuller-bodied and more strongly hopped.

I love this beer; it’s probably my favorite beer classified on RateBeer as a brown ale. It’s moderately hoppy without being overwhelming, and it seems to achieve a balance that I’d like...relatively dry for a brown ale, not as much as some stouts but enough that it’s refreshing. Seems pretty complex too. I became a huge fan of this beer when I live in CT and it was pretty widely available; here in PA I drink it less only because it’s less available. It’s described as full-bodied but to me, in spite of its high ABV, this beer has a certain lightness to it, perhaps because it’s a little less sweet.

Une bouteille partagée. 03/09/2015. Une robe cuivrée avec une mousse blanche. Un nez de malt biscuit bien défini avec des notes de chocolat et de noix. Une bouche mince avec des saveurs de noix. Agréable mais elle n’a pas le corps que promet l’étiquette.

Bottle from beer club. Good enjoyable beer, pours dark mahogany with a thin head. Tastes of chocolate and toast. Had a little little higher than normal IBU's then you usually find in a beer of the style ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poured out of a 12 oz bottle. A brown color leaning toward Amber. A thin head that didn't stick around. The taste followed the color, Carmel for sure and a little sweet but not cloying. Not much coffee like some Browns try to get. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Clear light brown with a two-finger off white head. Aromas of bready malt, nuts and a touch of floral hops. Caramel sweetness highlights the malt-dominant flavor profile that includes cashews and a slight bitterness from the floral. Light to medium bodied, modest carbonation, sticky mouthfeel and a fairly clean finish.

Beer of month club. Pours a clear light brown with quickly disappearing foam head. Nose of some malt and some sweetness - maybe even a drop of cinnamon. Taste is caramel, brown sugar with a malt backbone. On the sweet side, but I like it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

In short: smooth malty ale.
Pours some hazy copper with some off white head. Short head retention, some lacing. Malty, biscuits, some honey aromas, some roasty, caramel ones. Medium body, average to soft carbonation, oily texture. Taste is malty, caramel, some toffee and roasty flavours. Smooth and enjoyable.
