Old Brown Dog has been cited as a classic example of the "American Brown Ale" style of beer. Compared to a typical English Brown Ale, Old Brown Dog is fuller-bodied and more strongly hopped.

I love this beer; itís probably my favorite beer classified on RateBeer as a brown ale. Itís moderately hoppy without being overwhelming, and it seems to achieve a balance that Iíd like...relatively dry for a brown ale, not as much as some stouts but enough that itís refreshing. Seems pretty complex too. I became a huge fan of this beer when I live in CT and it was pretty widely available; here in PA I drink it less only because itís less available. Itís described as full-bodied but to me, in spite of its high ABV, this beer has a certain lightness to it, perhaps because itís a little less sweet.

It has a pleasant nutty aroma. Pours a deep brown color. It has a nice mix of nuts, caramel, malt, and a touch of hops. Its solid but not anything special.

On tap. Brown color with a finger head and great lacing. Aroma is malty and nutty. Taste is a nice roasted malt flavor with just a touch of hop flavor to balance it out. The hops are barely noticeable but they add a nice balance. This was a really good beer and worth a try

Nice to be finding some old Shuttle beers. Reviewed by notes. This was poured into a pint glass several times and mugs several times. The only I could ever find was the head always seems to last longer in the mug. Donít ask me why- I didnít make it. Here goes. The appearance was the obvious color -- uh brown right (insert sarcastic wink here). Thereís a decently smooth one finger white to off white foamy head that really takes its time to settle into the beer. The lacing left in the wake of the dieing head is somewhat foamy. The smell was always magical for a brown ale as some light nutty caramel and toffee malts danced around specks of a roasty sort of chocolate malts. The taste was mainly sweet and roasty allowing the nuts to maintain a decently healthy flavoring arousing my taste buds to waken to pure brown ale bliss. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a superb sessionability about it. To make a beer this dark and still be as sessionable as it is shows much respect to the brewer. I have always loved how gently this rolls across my mouth and tongue. Overall, this is Smuttynoseís best in my opinion and was the Brown Ale that got me hooked on brown ales other than Bellís. Someday, I hope to get back to the distro of this beer. Brown ale fans, this is one not to pass up.

12oz bottle. Clear copper with a foamy off-white head. Flavors are toffee, toasted malts, licorice and leaves with fruity and nutty notes. Light to medium body, moderate carbonation, oily texture. Alright.

Bottle. Medium brown pour with very little head. Sweet fruit aromas, raisin and apricot. Flavour is less sweet than the aroma, same fruits, roasty malt, a touch of grain and smoke, and a citrus hop character that disappears as it warms. Nice brown ale.

I had this at Global Brew. Pours brown with a tan head. Taste Carmel, nutty, roasted malt. I didn't care for this. I wouldn't drink it again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

The malt flavor permeates at first nose glance. Rivals any English brown ale. Smooth flavor with a foamy head resembling the character of the beer ! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
