Dacrza (164), Great Meadows, New Jersey, USA Feb 19, 2008 Dark brown body with brown three-finger head befitting a rootbeer...head settles quickly...slightly opaque...light fruity esthers with a malt balance that is pleasant...slightly effervescent palate that tucks into the tongue with a medium body... a nice compliment to a meal or fine as a stand-alone...always looking for a solid brown ale, I believe Smuttynose to have crafted this nicely with a combination of mellowness and substance....
zappafan99 (332), Rock Hill, South Carolina, USA Oct 5, 2008 Taste 10/8. Looks: Brown. Aroma: Roasted malt, coffee, chocolate. Taste: A nice quality brown. Smooth, rich, nutty and a little chocolate. Even balance. BelgianBeerGal (978), Sabbatical in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Sep 29, 2008 Draught sample at the Portsmouth restaurant. Still not a big fan of brown ales and this one did not change my opinion. Certainly drinkable but seemed a little bland and chalky, especially at the finish. esjaygee (820), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA Sep 19, 2008 Clear brown with a tan head. Aroma of nuts, heavily roasted malt and caramel. Taste of nuts, sweet malt, caramel. Body is somewhat chalky but overall a decent brown ale. durhambeer (535), Durham, USA Sep 16, 2008 Draft at Union Hall. Medium/dark brown pour with creamy off-white head. Roasty malt on the nose as well as toffee and dark dried fruits. Definite hop presence as well. A little nutty and a touch of chocolate. Quite enjoyable overall. Would have enjoyed a few more of these. SuzyGreenberg (1044), Seattle, Washington, USA Sep 15, 2008 sampler @ portsmouth brewery - dark brown, mostly clear, thin off-white creamy head; enjoyable aromas of malt, dank fruit, caramel; fairly sweet; body is on the thin side and could more sweetness in the flavors for my liking
