Old Brown Dog has been cited as a classic example of the "American Brown Ale" style of beer. Compared to a typical English Brown Ale, Old Brown Dog is fuller-bodied and more strongly hopped.

This is my "cheater" beer - it pairs amazingly well with absolutely anything you might grill. Great balance of malts and hops and a good flavor that doesn’t overwhelm or leave you wishing for more. If there’s a BBQ, cookout, or summer get-together, this is the first thing I reach for.

Pours an oranges brown with thin off-white head. Caramel, spices on the nose. Decent carbonation, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Caramel, molasses, brown sugar, dark citrus. Overall, a pleasing brown ale.

Bottle. Pours a deep red-brown with a high, fine-grained, soft cream-colored head with lace. Lots of visible carbonation. Nose is smoke, soy sauce, sage, rosemary, toast, and oak. Really nice baking chocolate up front, followed by savory notes and a whisky or dark rum-like smokiness. Lots of substance to it; not at all shallow or thin. Finish is long with a touch of toffee sweetness. I like this style when done well, and this is definitely done very, very well.

Has a dark brown color, darker than most oktoberfest beers. This is not an ipa, but it has a bitter finish like one. Tasted on 10\18\2013

Aroma of malt, great looking beer, iced tea color with a thick creamy head. Sweet taste of malt with a watery feel and a malty palate.

Pours an iced tea color with a thin white head. Aroma is a tad malty with a bit of coffee and smoke. Taste is a bit of roasted malt, smoke, and a hint of coffee bitterness. This is a decent brown ale.

GIJOE (621) - North Berwick, Maine, USA - JUL 30, 2014
Pours brown with a thin off-white head. Very malty on the nose; a little yeasty at first, but that settled down. Taste is sweet, like a root beer. Slight hop presence, particularly in the finish. Medium body. Mild carbonation. A little plain, but quite drinkable.

The body has a dark brown look with a beautiful garnet hue. The pour produces a only a small on inch tall beige head which fades fast and leaves only a ring of foam on top of the beer. Lacing is minimal. In the nose I pick up nice bready and roasted barley notes. This has a mildly sweet character overall with no hops. On the tongue there is a pleasant sweetness and toasted character from the roasted malt and bready ale yeast. There are nice chocolaty and caramelized notes with suggestions of maple sugar dark brown sugar and just a light kiss of hop spice in the background. The finish is still on the sweet side but with hops coming out more in the late in the finish. Its palate has a full body with a smooth texture
