Commercial Description:
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Bottle. One of my favorite beers from "back in the day." Pours a slightly cloudy orange with a thick foamy light tan head that leaves nice lacing on the side of the glass. Aroma mostly of pumpkin spices (lots of nutmeg with a pinch of cinnamon) and faint pumpkin. Flavor is still more spice than actual pumpkin with a bitter finish. Palate is slightly weak and watery. This is a decent beer but it lags behind many other pumpkin ales.

Tastes much like an IPA with pumpkin and related spices, one of the best pumpkins so far but not a great beer a bit salty tasting for me.

Why are people so crazy about pumpkin ales, I often wonder. Cooked vegetables and a bit of spice in the nose. A bit of bitterness and saltiness in the finish. Low carbonation. Nothing great, but not terrible either.

Had at the brewery, they were bottling it and a couple of bottles got pulled off the line just before capping. Poured a hazy yellow with a beige head. Aroma was of cloves and cinnamon with a hint of nutmeg. Flavor was a mild pumpkin a good malt backbone and a hop bitterness in the finish.

Cask@GBBF2008 (my notes said ABV 5.1%). Slightly hazy yellowish orange colour, with small white head. Nice lace. Aroma is spices, some fruits and pumpkin pie. Flavour is very much the same, more spicy than of pumpkin though. Nothing that exciting.

Bottle. Just didn’t work for me very well. Couldn’t really detect much of an aroma, and I certainly didn’t detect any pumpkin in it. Nice lacing on the glass. Taste for me was a bit muddled, heavy, with malt and some sourness. Couldn’t really taste much pumpkin! I’ve heard a lot of good things about Smuttynose, so I think I’ll try something else from them.

Orange with thin white head. Nice nutmeg pumpkin aroma carries over somwhat heavily into the taste. Dry with medium carbonation. $2/12oz

I normally love all Smuttynose but this one just missed the mark. It smelled like pumpkin and spices. The taste is where it looses me. I normally like a good pumpkin ale but this tastes like you were eating dried spices - literally. It felt like I had herbs and spices in my mouth that I was chewing. maybe I had a bad one? I’’ll have to go back to this.
