Commercial Description:
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Appearance: Pours a clear, orangey body with a small, off-white head. A nice pumpkiny hue! Smell: Sweetish, cakey, pumpkin aroma. Some slight squashy, vegetal notes. Plenty of pumpkin pie spice blend in the nose. Taste: Spicy-sweet, tangy pumpkin flavor. A bite of pound cake. Mild hop bitterness. Cumulative spiciness. Dash of vanilla-flavored sugar on the pumpkiny finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: A fine pumpkin. It definitely doesn’t delve into the territory of imperialized pumpkin ales, but it still pleasant and plenty tasty.

Slightly hazy orange pour has a thin, stringy-lacing white head. Aroma of fresh pumpkin and cinnamon spice with a touch of doughy yeast. Body starts with a big pumpkin flavor and some crisp bittering hops and spices. Finishes crisp and bittersweet with some black peppery notes. A pretty decent pumpkin ale.

Pours a light orange color that is fairly clear – not much head with light lacing and average carbonation. Dominate smell is sweet pumpkin spice. First taste is light, sweet, with pumpkin spice dominating. Mouthfeel is truly remarkable. This is not over spiced like a lot of pumpkin beers are.

12oz bottle. Absolutely wonderful aroma of a perfectly brewed pumpkin\squash ale. I love pumpkin beers, as long as they’re not over spiced. Creamy mouthfeel. Tasty malt character with a spot on squash flavor. Good flavor without the spice. The way I like them

Bottle. Pours a hazy pumpkin pie color with a thin white head. Aroma was a lot of nutmeg, a bit of brown sugar. Smellls just like pumpkin pie. Taste was nutmeg and allspice. Palate was obtrusive and not enjoyable.

Very interesting beer. It looks, smells and tastes just like you might think and what Smuttynose probably intended. Orange colored with a relatively thick off-white head and nice amount of lacing. Ditto on the aroma, very spicy and like pumpkin pie with hops mixed in. The taste is much of the same. Spicy, cinnamon and much like a fresh pumpkin pie. While I can’t really see myself drinking too many of these, I did enjoy the one I had.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye . Light copper color with small off-white head. Pumpkin puree and cinnamon nose. Flavor has a touch of pumpkin, but more cinnamon, ginger and even some clove. A little thin on the body, yet still a nice spiced ale.
