Commercial Description:
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Light color and body wiht not much head. Odd spice aroma like burnt pie wiht some bitterness. Taste is sweeter than aroma. Some spices and pine. Not one of my pumps.

Cloudy brown/orange, thin light tan head. Nose is pumpkin pie spice - primarily nutmeg & clove. Also some other undefined spices and a slight sour twang. Flavor is strong spice - mostly nutmeg, some dry cinnoman, a hint of lemon, some malt. Spice dominated finish with too much nutmeg. Overall just way too much spice.

Bottle. Light copper color. Minimal head. Nice spicy aroma of pumpkins and spices. Quite refreshing, light, and drinkable. Doesn’t wow me with flavor, but shows the pumpkin novelty beer can be a very palatable, crisp tasting style. I’d buy this again for sure.

Clear orange amber with head that dissipates quickly but never fully goes away. Nose has a balanced complex spice aroma. The spices and pumpkin flavor are in the forefront, but the hops and malt are present as well. Body is more on the thin side but enjoyable considering the crisp/dry/refreshing finish. Great on tap as well. This can be a fine fall session beer. Pumpkin ales are usually either weak ambers with some spice and pumpkin or very spicy/pumpkin/creamy imperials. This beer bridges the gap.
