Commercial Description:
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

12 oz bottle. Pours a coppery , yellow color with a small white head. Nose is of mild pumpkin and clove like spice. Light mouthfeel. This was my first pumpkin beer so I don’t have much of a base to compare to. Taste was mostly of grains with a pumpkin nutmeg background. I thought the pumpkin taste was just right. I wouln’t want the brew to taste like liquid pumpkin pie. Good brew.

(Bottle) Pours a clear copper body with a small off-white head. Aroma of pumpkin spice and nutmeg. Flavor of mild grassy hops, caramel, and light pumpkin.

12oz bottle. Pours a medium, ruby-tinged orange color; small off-white head with patchy lacing. Tons of nutmeg upfront in the aroma; not much behind it. Spicy, medium mouthfeel: plenty of nutmeg and pumpkin spices; hints of warm cinnamon, with a creamy sugar and vanilla note at the center; shows a ton of dry spice upfront, which evens out after the first few sips. A pretty solid pumpkin beer. Medium, brown sugar and nutmeg finish.

Aroma of cinnamon, pumpkin, and nutmeg. Flavor is very strong of nutmeg, really overwhelming on this bottle.

Pours a orange color with light head. Aroma is of pumpkin pie spice and mint? Mint? WTF? Anyway, taste is of nutmeg, light brown sugar, and MINT? Where is this mint coming from? Tastes like mouthwash. Blech. Moderate carbonation. Glad I only bought one bottle.

A very bright orange and light-swallowing pour. Pungent, juicy pumpkin nose. Rich, like brown sugar on squash, with moments of lovely pistachio sweetness. Swift vinegar, ginger and a hint of anise, which settles with a soft dryness onto the tongue. The pumpkin mash, sweet and dense, is layered a bit thick over an underdeveloped malt structure. Steamed carrots and some weird tanginess. Light to medium body with a fairly dead texture. Earthy, dark sweetness on the smack. Better balance would be nice.

this beer should be called -pumpkin spice generic mouthwash- it is mildly dissapointing because 1- they make damn good beers 2- the hanami fiasco makes the possibility mild. disingenuine in taste - not creative in balance body or carbonation. but hey, you guys win a lot and i don’t hold it against you! i only bought one bottle.

Pours nicely with good head and spicy aromas. Cinnamon, vanilla, clove spice with pumpkin pie flavors almost overwhelming on the taste. While this beer has a lot of character, it is quite sweet and a tad cloying. Not a bad pumpkin spiced brew, but a little too spiced to have more than one.
