Commercial Description:
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

The aroma is pleasant and big, it hits with the season’s best: pumpkin, nutmeg, and maybe squash. A nice appearance with a rusty orange color, not entirely clear, and with a big, creamy, off-white head. The flavor does not match the aroma quite as well, but the pumpkin, cinnamon and nutmeg tastes are all present; quite sweet overall, slightly bitter. Soon after the pour the palate feel was great, with a creamy, fizzy effect, but as the head faded it became a bit flatter. It’s a good seasonal beer, and captures the pumpkin flavors and scents, but does not stand out as much as I had hoped.

I didn’t taste or smell pumpkin. It was mostly nutmeg. Not one of the better pumpkin ales but not bad either.

Pours an orange brown color with an off white head. Nutmeg and cinnamon are the most prominent things in the nose. It is a slow drinking beer with a medium mouthfeel and it leaves a certain aftertaste in the mouth. Almost no pumpkin flavor mostly the taste was of spices thrown into the pumpkin pie. Drinkable, but I wouldn’t buy it. Maybe it just ain’t my cup of tea.

12 oz bottle. Pours a coppery , yellow color with a small white head. Nose is of mild pumpkin and clove like spice. Light mouthfeel. This was my first pumpkin beer so I don’t have much of a base to compare to. Taste was mostly of grains with a pumpkin nutmeg background. I thought the pumpkin taste was just right. I wouln’t want the brew to taste like liquid pumpkin pie. Good brew.

12oz bottle. Pours a medium, ruby-tinged orange color; small off-white head with patchy lacing. Tons of nutmeg upfront in the aroma; not much behind it. Spicy, medium mouthfeel: plenty of nutmeg and pumpkin spices; hints of warm cinnamon, with a creamy sugar and vanilla note at the center; shows a ton of dry spice upfront, which evens out after the first few sips. A pretty solid pumpkin beer. Medium, brown sugar and nutmeg finish.

Aroma of cinnamon, pumpkin, and nutmeg. Flavor is very strong of nutmeg, really overwhelming on this bottle.
