Commercial Description:
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Poured a clouded rusty orange with just a thin white head. Big time spicy/nutmeg aroma, except it almost has a twist of lemon it it. The flavor parallels ... almost citrusy lemon-lime-iness at first, and then the undertow of pumpkin.

Tap- I was helping them blow this keg out. Light orange color. Not much head on this one. Hints of cinnamon, honey, cloves, and brown sugar spices. Starts off a bit sweet and has a dry finish to it. I also had a secon one with some cinnamon sugar around the rim. Great holiday beer.

Cloudy amber. Smell of flowers, pumpkin, ginger, clove, hops and sometimes laundry detergent. Taste of pumpkin, cinnamon and a very heavy tart bitterness at the end. It smelled a lot better than it tastes but still one on the good pumpkin beers out there.

bottle-pours peach/orange with a sudsy white head around the rim of the glass. big spicy nose with notes of opened pumpkin, veggie, and cinnamon. nice nose! comples flavors for the style-afformentioned spices, pumpkin, other cooked veggies, light grainy malts and some earthy hop notes with a touch of shoveled earth. pretty complex as most smuttynose beers tend to be. body is nice and crisp. definately a pumpkin i could drink alot of. smuttynose has not dissapointed me yet!

Bottled. Beautiful appearance with vibrant amber orange color. Smell of crisp pumpkin and spice. The beer was very hoppy with a light spice aftertaste. As the beer warmed, the pumpkin and fruit flavor became more apparent. Average body with a light burn. Overall an average beer.

Aroma full off spice and pumpkin. Nice thick off-white head. Orange body with mild carbonation. Pretty good pumpkin flavor. Lingering spice and hop finish. Good stuff.

I had not enjoyed the pumpkin ales that I tried before this, but something in the air prompted me to pick this one up. As soon as I opened the bottle I was intrigued. A pumpkin pie spice aroma is very prominent. I was afraid the taste would be too sweet, but it actually had the subtlety of fresh natural pumpkin. Most important, though, was the strong balance of pumpkin and hops. I couldn’t get enough of this.
