Commercial Description:
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Cold 12oz bottle: Pours a clear amber color with a small amount of ivory bubbles. Aroma is of cinnamon and pumpkin. Taste is of nutmeg and sweet malt. Starts more bitter and definitely ends sweet.

Nice frothy, foamy head that settles into a thin layer of bubbles on the surface. Citusy aroma of grapefruit, pumpkin, spices (nutmeg, cinnamon), hops, malt. Overall a predominantly hoppy flavor, but with a great pumpkin presence and elements of malt and grains. Pretty good, although these sorts of beers aren’t usually my thing.

[bottle] Excellent appearance- bright amber with a full, frothy head. Excellent lacing on the glass. Aroma is very spicy- nutmeg, cinnamon and certainly some pumpkin. Kind of has some odd soapy smell going on as well. Flavors are pretty much right on, as expected. Sweet ginger and nutmeg make up most of the initial flavors, giving way to a nice spiciness towards the end.

Delicious! This is a more mild and mellow pumpkin beer. Not too much spice upfront which is good. Most pumpkin ales are so heavily spiced you can only have one. The spice creeps up at the end here. Can easily put down a six. Nice murky orange color. Smooth and tasty! A perfect example of a balanced pumpkin beer. Enjoy this with apples and razorblades

Nice spicy pumpkin aroma. I get more pumpkin in the aroma than the taste. Taste has a nice balance of sweetness and spice. A good beer, but I’m not going crazy over it.

This is one of the most highly underrated brews I’ve come across to date. The pour is a beautiful orange-hazy copper, with a great head, retention and sticky lacing. The nose is spot on for fresh pumpkin pie, cinammon and ginger. Flavors of deep-spiced pumpkin pulp/meat (nutneg first, then Allspice, ginger and cinammon), with a nice earthy finish. The mouthfeel is medium-round, and the carbonation nicely provides to cleanse the palate for most cream-based foods. This is a VERY good offering, and truly the best pumpkin ale I’ve ever had!

12 oz bottle shared with Dan. Pours a nice orange/light amber with a medium frothy head. Aroma is very spicy, I get the aroma of freshly grated ginger, and nutmeg in the aroma. taste is light pumpkin, malt, and lots of spices. Spices and pumpkin seem to compliment rather than dominate this beer, very good.
