Commercial Description:
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Bottle: Courtesy of BuckNaked via trade. Very nice aroma of nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, and pumpkin. Pours a cloudy orangish-red with some sediment and a small white head. Flavor is not as nice as the aroma. Moderate nutmeg up front with some hints of pumpkin. Finish with a gingery bitterness. A touch of sweetness would do a lot for the flavor. As it warms, a touch malt starts to come thru, but a tad more wouldn’t hurt.

My favorite seasonal is pumpkin ale and this one is number two between Dogfish Head at #1 and everyone else behind. Forget Buffalo Bill’s... but try Ship Yard’s. The spice was right on but have this with desert not with the entre as it will numb your mouth and kill the flavor of all but the heavyest meals.

Bottle. Hazy orange body, small white head. Strong aroma of pumpkin and spice - nutmeg? Slight citrus. Flavour has a prominent bitterness both from hops and spices. Lingering citrus and spice in the aftertaste. Not unpleasant but a bit of an odd overall impression. Average palate. Thanks Tupalev.

Orangy in color, like pumpkins. Small head. Nose is spicy and pumpkiny, with some hops to boot. Flavor is disapointingly weak after the strong aroma. Smooth on the palate, goes down easy. Definitely not the best pumpkin brew out there.

Smells good but very hoppy, not neccisarily bad but weird mix of pumpkin flavor and strong hops

No head at all. Golden amber color. Hint of pumpkin with some hops and mutmeg. Weak for a pumpkin ale. Very disappointed with this offering.

I’m not a big fan of Smutty or a big fan of pumpkin ales, but I do like this one more than I expected. Good sweet and spicy pumpkin nose. Pours a great dark cloudy orange with a small tan-to-orange head. Sweet malt and herbal taste, with adequate but not overwhelming nutmeg and other spices. Good mouth ... lighter than I expected but with a nice tannic chalkiness. Thre is nothing about it I love, but it just sort of works pretty well.

Pours a clear golden color with a very small head and no lacing. Aroma is pretty mild/weak and non-descript. Upon second whiff, I get a faint hint of spice (nutmeg, all-spice). The flavor is pretty good, but I am still on the quest for the ultimate pumpkin beer with lots of spice which this just doens’t have (in my opinion). It’s a very enjoyable beer nonetheless and easy to drink due to it’s light and crisp palate makeup.
