Commercial Description:
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Pours a cloudy orange amber with a small lacing off white head. Aroma is cinnamon and pumpkin. Flavor is cinnamon up front with some pumpkin to balance.

I found this to be one of the more displeasing pumpkin brews this season. The aroma was quite weak and it looked quite cloudy. The taste was of pumpkin and hops, which clashed really badly. The extreme carbonation did not help the clash, but only increased my discomfort. Not a great beer.

This is the best fall seasonal I’ve tried this year. Medium light orange and brown color that didn’t respond with much of a head. Aroma is equal parts malt, hop and spice. The mouthfeel of this beer is fantastic, full and thick but without graininess or feeling syrupy. Taste is a perfect blend of all that is aforementioned with a perfect hop kick at the end and a splash of spice. No need for pumpkin pie, I’ll have one of these for dessert!

Pours a light amber coppersih color with a small white head. Smells of pumpkin, nutmeg, brown sugar and cinnamon. Taste can be described as a light beer version of a pumpkin brew. Kind of watered down with hints of pumpkin and nutmeg. Dry finish. Average at best.

Clear orange color. Aroma is of nutmeg, cinnamon, spice and a dry, grassy hop nose. Sweet malt flavor with lots of fall spices augmented by a bitter finish.

Bottle. Brewed and bottled: 08/05. A hazy orange pour with a very thin light-tan head. Spicy, pumpkiny aroma. The ingredients really mesh well in the aroma, unlike other pumpkin beers where each spice seems to stand out individually. This smells more like an actual pie. Taste is hoppier than other pumpkin beers I’ve had. Tastes more like the pie crust than the pumpkin, though there’s still a good bit of sweet pumpkin and malts present. A hoppy, spicy finish. Different than the others (more IPA qualities), but good in its own way.

Bottle. What better way to ring in the fall season than to tailgate at a UConn football game, and enjoy a pumpkin ale. Orange and clear with a decent head. Somewhat spicy aroma, almost like pumpkin pie, but not totally. Some nutmeg and brown sugar in the nose as well. The flavor has all the aspects of pumpkin pie, but they never come together all at once. It first hits your tongue sweet with pumpkin spices and nutmeg ... like the meat of the pumpkin pie. Swirl it around a bit, and you get a subdued sweetness along with a slight nuttiness. This must be the crust. It finishes very dry and chalky. It appears they forgot to take the stems off of the pumpkins before adding them to the mix. Overall, it’s rather good
