Commercial Description:
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Yellow with a small white head. Strong cinnamon and nutmeg aroma with a hint of nutty pumpkin. Sweet and spicy flavour with a ridiculous amount of nutmeg in the aftertaste.

This one has a nice pumpkin and spice aroma. Pours orangish. Has a good solid hoppy, malty base flavor, and the pumpkin is sudbued and very interesting. This one was hard to find, but worth the effort.

Range copper ale with a spicey belgian pumpkin aroma. Intense pumpkin pi with smutty hops and sweet caramel. Good bodied. Again, very pleasant pumpkin. (October 2004).

12 oz bottle. Faintly cloudy bright orange, big ol’ head. Fresh, delicate pumpkin and herbal nose, with cumin, honey, tarragon and rosemary. On the tongue, quite dry with nothing reminiscent of pumpkin pie...this is herbal and pungent, like an Afghan or Nepalese pumpkin dish, quite distinct from the typical usage of this flavor in beer, and with an interesting touch of coffee to finish. Really nice.

From a bottle purchased in Madison, WI. The body is medium orange with a white head on top. The aroma was spicy nutmeg and pumpkin with a little bit of sweet cigar tobacco. The taste had a fairly strong nutmeg presence with only hints of pumpkin in the background. There was also a little bit of toabcco. An interesting and earthy, spicy pumpkin ale.

Full on ginger bread in the appealing cookie dough aroma. Hazy copper coloured body with a decent off white head that recedes to partial cover with some lacing. Floral and ginger spiciness with doughy yeast and dry, assertive and lasting finishing bitterness. Medium full body with soft carbonation. Very tasty in small amounts but spiciness builds and sweetness becomes cloying. Sampled on tap the The Ginger Man in NYC with Olivier_MTL and Rastacouere.

Bottle via DocLock: Pours a hazy orangy amber hue with a small frothy head and minimal lace. The aroma is very spicy and does hint of pumpkin. The nutmeg and cinnamom can do a number on the nose and for that matter the palate. The taste is far better than any Pumpkin based brew I have had yet, while the spce and vegetable is noticeable, the malt and grassy hops can be found. The feel is chalky and soft. While good for the style, I still don’t dig these beers much.

Bottled. Hazy medium amber with a short layer of off-white headage. Nose was spicy (nutmeg, clove, and coriander) with airy, dried floral hops. Spicy as well in the flavor department, with little pumpkin noted... moderate bitterness. Unpleasantly metallic on the palate with tart, wheaty notes toward the finish.. not much in terms of body either. Not toward the top of my list for pumpkin beers.
