Commercial Description:
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle with an expiration date of Jan ’10. The pour is a handsome orange-amber with a decent puffy white head and significant lacing. The aroma is not very potent but it does have a bit of pumpkin spice and crisp hops. The mouthfeel is medium. The taste has some elements of hops but little along the line of traditional pumpkin spices. Hops are evident but not strong. Overall it was not a bad experience but it seemed to be lacking something.

Murky dark brown color with minimal head. Spicy aroma, nutmeg, allspice, pumpkin. Same goes for the flavor, sweet with a malty finish. A bit darker than some other pumpkin ales.

Pours bright deep orange with a tiny head. Aroma is slightly pumpkin spice. Taste is watery at first but great pumpkin spice on the finish. Awesome subtle pumpkin taste. Well done.

Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is a cloudy pumpkin-colored ale with an off-white, soft, foamy head that has good retention and lacing. The aroma is bready and strong in nutmeg with perhaps coriander, cinnamon and lemon zest. It smells very fresh and homebrewish. The pumpkin is not apparent in the aroma-- pumpkin bread, maybe. It has a medium light body-- reasonably smooth with a dusty, dry finish. All of the aroma’s spices are confirmed in the flavor. There is a thin woodenness to it, like toasted pumpkin seeds. The bitterness swoops in at the end of the swallow and lingers for a bit. The bitterness seems more from coriander than from hops. It tastes autumny without being abusive with pumpkin. Well-spiced.

12 oz. single bottle from Total Wine in Jacksonville, FL. It’s nice to see Smuttynose worked its way down I-95 into North Florida. Spice notes of pumpkin and cinnamon for a good aroma, though a little bitter, but still holds that pumpkin taste. Has a nice finish. Good beer.

Pours an orange copper with a very small head and noticeably high level of carbonation. Aroma heavy with spice, yeast, mustiness, and some sour malt. Flavor is interesting- not too sweet like most autumn based ales, but almost on the bitter side. Not particularly pleasant, but certainly unique and curious. The spice makes it more palatable, but this is one of Smutty’s stranger creations. Not bad, but no where near the top of the list coming from their brewery.

Really light and fizzy, with a hint of pumpkin. Not so much on the cinnamon and nutmeg aspects, nice and smooth. Very fizzy, tho. Bottle at Stop and Shop, South Miami.
