COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of Americaís brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Tastes a lot worse than it looks. A lot of silly nonsense going on in this pumpkin ale- hardly any hint of spices or autumnal flavor. Not a lot of interesting stuff going on here, just tastes flat and bored.

Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale 6.6%, I picked this up last winter in Rome so the best before date is actually June 22, 2015 which means this beerís past itís best but hey thatís how things go when youíre an expat I guess. It pours a nice looking orange gold with a fairly thick light beige head. So far, so good. The nose is cinnamon, allspice, possibly coriander and some pumpkin flesh as well. Soft bodied, it feels like it may have lost some carbonation over time. The taste is nutty pumpkin flesh, cinnamon and light pumpkin pie spices. A pretty standard pumpkin beer, not over the top like Pumking but then again that might be due to itís age. Good fun stuff.

Another pumpkin beer that doesnít deliver the pumpkin pie experience. Another malty ale with fall spices. Just not what Iím looking for in a pumpkin beer.

In bottiglia. Non riesco ad amare questo stile e mi viene difficile da giudicare. Palato con sentori di zucca, zucchero caramellato, frutta gialla, zenzero.

My bottle had 6.3% ABV stamped near the neck with the bottling date. This one is less pumpkin pie filling flavor and more malty ale with some spice and slight pumpkin. Good balance without tasting phony. Possibly a more realistic version of early American ale with a slight bitterness in the finish. No cloying sweetness. And it seems the spices are more noticeable as it warms slightly.

Bottle from systembolget. Sorry US, but I just canít get the idea with pumpkin beer. This was one of the better but still nothing for me. Just spices all over.

Bottle. Pours a clear light amber color. Aroma and taste are light pumpkin and some spices.

Originally rated on 10/19/14. Some pumpkin comes through in the aroma, along with spice and a bit of a caramel malt character, as well as a bit of a vegetable note. The flavor is also a bit more mild in the pumpkin spice, with a little more bitterness than other pumpkin beers, though more like an under ripe fruit or herbal tea bitterness. Not as pumpkin heavy as other pumpkin beers, but itís still there, and the beer itself seems better crafted than most.

Bottle. Orangey coloured beer with a reasonable head. The aroma is herbal, and the flavour is quite deeply bitter with a herbal and spiced body. Overall a reasonable beer but quite strangely tasting at the outset. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle thanks to allmyvinyl. Appearance - golden amber with an attractive lacy head. Nose - pumpkin and nutmeg. Cloves too. Taste - nutmeg and light cloves. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy middle section and a dry spicy finish. Overall - they have tried to hide the pumpkin (successfully) in the spices. Iíd like to taste more pumpkin. Good though.

Bottle at Ashís. Pours hazy amber with a thin white head. Aromas of spice, clove, light fruit. Taste is nutmeg, spicy, not finding the pumpkin. Dry spicy finish.
