Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Tastes a lot worse than it looks. A lot of silly nonsense going on in this pumpkin ale- hardly any hint of spices or autumnal flavor. Not a lot of interesting stuff going on here, just tastes flat and bored.

Overall not a bad pumpkin beer. Very light pumpkin taste which is what I prefer. Would look to purchase this if I was liking for a pumpkin variety ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poured a bright yellow amber colour with a thin head. Strong aroma of pumpkin with little spice. Taste is the same, but with richer notes of brown sugar and nutmeg on the back end with a very hoppy after taste. Tends to leave a dry flavor in the mouth, but still pretty drinkable.

Pours cloudy, dark yellow, slight thin head, decent lacing. Aroma pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, slight fruity esters, slight bready malt. Taste slightly bitter floral, pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, slight graininess. Mouthfeel thinnish body, lower carbonation, slight bitter bite, sweet finish. Overall decent pumpkin beer, nothing special, flavors well balanced.

Bottle. Pours a clear copper color with a nice, off white head. Pumpkin aroma with a strong sense of spices and nutmeg. Smooth, light spice taste with some pumpkin flavors in the finish. Not bad, but it’s no Pumking.

Cloves and cinnamon in the aroma. Appearance is a clear gold with a white head with avg. head retention. Spices are muddled in the taste. Malt notes of bread with low hop bitterness, but with the spices it dries out the beer. Low body mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Spices add an unpleasant astringency that lasts on the end. Overall, the aroma is good, but the taste is muddled and astringent. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Not a nice looking beer. Cinnamon and clove are dominating the aroma. Once I taste the beer I get a very astringent bite on the finish. Not my favorite version of the style at all ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Transfer from BA review on 8-4-12- Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass Appearance – Served a copper-orange color with a small white head. The head faded fast to leave a good level of lacing. Smell – The smell was a mix of pumpkin and bready aroma. Mixed with these was a brown sugar sweetness with lighter notes of some nutmeg and allspice as well. Taste – The taste was heaviest of a bready malt flavor up front with only a brown sugar flavor. The pumpkin then comes to the tongue with some almost roasted malt flavors as well. By the end the sweetness has faded some and the beer is more dry in nature. In the middle of the taste as the roasted flavor enter and the sugar flavor fades, the presence of the some cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice also develop. In the end a spiced pumpkin flavor is left to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average in terms of thickness and is average in its level of carbonation as well. For the pumpkin flavors the carbonation suits it well, but the body would have been better suited if it were a bit thicker. Overall – Ah… It was a nice beer to try but not one I would really go to on any occasion.

Reviewed from notes. This was poured into a pint glass. The appearance was a ruddy orange to brown color with a decent one finger white foamy head that dissipated within less than a minute. The lacing was somewhat thick and not so clingy as it slid right into the body. The smell had a good amount of pumpkin with some light ginger, allspice and light cinnamon. The taste took those flavorings and seemed to have combined them all nicely. On the palate, this one sat fairly light at times, but did end up displaying sometimes a resemblance to a medium body. There’s a decent sessionable aspect to this one. Overall, this is definitely one of the better pumpkin ales on the market. I would love to get this again if ever possible.

The body has a deep orange amber color with a cloudy look. The pour produces a one finger thick white cap of foam. It slowly fades down to just a very thin layer of bubbles that makes a little slice lacing on the glass. The aroma has a spicy, vegetable/squash like bouquet with some light toasted malt notes as well. Up front there are solid spice flavors of cinnamon, allspice and clove with some roasted pumpkin and toasted malt underneath. The finish sees a good balance of flavor as the spicy hops creeps in and adds some nice bitterness to the mix. The palate has a solid medium body with average carbonation and a mellow drinkable texture.
