COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Bottled. Pours a golden brown with a finger of head. Nose had nutmeg, cinnamon, pumpkin. Initial taste had a gingerbready and pumpkin taste. After letting it warm up, the initial gingerbread taste went away and what was left more nutmeggy and bitter. None of the traditional spices used was too overwhelming. Not a bad brew.

12 oz bottle served in a pint glass. Slightly hazy amber color with a small but remarkably durable off white head. Spotty scraps of lace are left on the glass. Aroma: a bit too soapy/yeasty/musty, and has an out of place floral note. Pumpkin pie spices evident but not overdone. Taste: excellent combination of beer, pumpkin and spices, with a fine sweet/bitter balance that starts mildly sweet and ends lightly bitter and earthy. Nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice linger on in the aftertaste. The spice load is significant but not over the top, allowing flavors of squash, malts and hops to shine through. Mouthfeel: medium carbonation seems spot on; medium body; very smooth.. O: Despite an unattractive aroma, Smuttynose Pumpkin is one of the best pumpkin ales I’ve ever had. Wish I’d bought more than one!

On tap. Pour is hazy amber with a small white head. Aroma is of faint pumpkins and nutmeg. Taste has a bit more hops than I expected with notes of light citrus, nutmeg and all spice. Light bodied, refreshing.

Pours a semi-clear rustic orange color with a thin head. Scent is mild with pumpkin scents and bready wheat. Maybe a slight banana? This pumpkin beer has some bite to it. I don’t notice the pumpkin flavor as much as I notice the hops. There is some pumpkin flavor to it but really has a very bitter hops taste to it. A refreshing taste that is interesting but not exactly what I was expecting a pumpkin beer to be like. Decent, but still no Pumpking!

Draught at the Pony Bar NYC sept 2012. Clear deep amber beer with a small creamy white head. Pumpkin, spices, fruity aroma and similar finish. I love this kind of beer :-)

From a cask at The Hop. Pretty dry and hoppy, more like a pale ale than a pumpkin brew. It is not really what I was hoping for (hopping for?).

Poured deep golden, a bit hazy from the bottle. One finger foamy head that dissipated quickly to a little layer that persisted and clung nicely to the glass. Aroma was a surprise hit of hops and a subtle, not overpowering pumpkin pie. Taste more or less followed, something of an IPA like taste with nice hops, bitter finish,, pumpkin pie sort of in the middle. Nice, overall. Some pumpkin, a touch of cinnamon, nutmeg, maybe clove. Aftertaste was definite, something almost objectionable, very lingering. Sort of peppery tingle that I find confusing. Not sure if it is supposed to be that way, but if clove is in there it makes sense. Good brew, probably not in the permanent rotation here, but enjoyable and would drink again.

Bottle from Knightly Spirits in Orlando. Slightly hazy orange pour with a small white head. Nice pumpkin/cinnamon/nutmeg aroma - taste is okay but falls a little short of the aroma. Decent brew.

From bottle. Not much going on in the nose... some pumpkin spice and english hop. Pours light brown with a big white head. Tastes very good compared to what I’d expect. A bit sweet but very pumpkin-y and spicy. This would be a good drink-all-day beer for fall. Mouthfeel leaves much to be desired.
