COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Pours a beautiful, cloudy orange. Not gold, not amber, not copper. Orange--one of the truest oranges I’ve seen in a beer. The thick, foamy, off-white head is long lasting with good retention. A beautiful beer in the glass. Aroma is of fresh pumpkin; some pielike spices are noticeable, especially clove, but pumpkin clearly dominates. Some floral hoppiness is discernible in the background. Flavor is a bit reversed, as toasted malts drive the flavor with pumpkin playing only a supporting role. Cloves and spice are noticeable, though. Hops add some bitterness to the aftertaste. Mouthfeel is watery, with some lively carbonation. In sum, a beer that I highly respect for its "historical" flavor, even if its not my favorite tastewise. Great appearance and flavor.

12oz bottle from sixpack. On sale for 5.99...still 4 months out from expiration. Foamy white had on top of a bright for the style orange body. Sort of intense spice aroma. Attempts a little more balance than most pumpkin beers, there is some balancing bitterness. Very drinkable, not as cloying as most. Pretty good.

Lovely looking ale. Hazy orange golden color with a thick fine head. Nice lacing. Nice aroma. Some spices and balanced fruity. Medium + body. Fine balance between sweetness and bitterness. Average to soft carbonation. What a tasty beer. Some spices like cardamom. Fruity (pumpkin I guess), toffee and some spruce. Nice one.

Expected a bit more after hearing good reviews. Would drink again but definitely not worth it to buy more than a 6er

Easy drinking pumpkin ale with just the right amount of spices. Normally the pumpkin ales tend to be too heavy with the spices, but this beer is done perfect for the style. Very much enjoyed this Smuttynose offering.

Murky pour with a quickly dissipating head and no lacing. Nutmeg aroma a peppery, spicy flavor that lingers long into the finish.

Pours a clear orange color with a small lacy white head. Strong aroma of pumpkin with little spice. Taste is the same, but with richer notes of brown sugar and nutmeg on the back end with a quite hoppy finish.

Bottle from web SB cons 2014-10-02 Göteborg Labeled 5,8% - new entry??? AR: rich in cinnamon, pumpkin meat AP: irn bru orange wee hazy, wee fizzy white head F: fizzy pumpkin, water feeling, Halloween spicey, medium + bitterness, OK - I bought because it was Smuttynose brewed beer - not so keen for pumpkin beers in general.
