COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Nice burnt sienna color with a thin lacing cream color head. A medium-bodied brew that has your run-of-the-mill pumpkin flavors of spice and harvest pumpkin, but nothing truly defining. I did drink this on the same night as the Pumking so this rating could be a bit biased, but overall a decent choice on a cool Fall night.

Transfer from BA review on 8-4-12- Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass Appearance – Served a copper-orange color with a small white head. The head faded fast to leave a good level of lacing. Smell – The smell was a mix of pumpkin and bready aroma. Mixed with these was a brown sugar sweetness with lighter notes of some nutmeg and allspice as well. Taste – The taste was heaviest of a bready malt flavor up front with only a brown sugar flavor. The pumpkin then comes to the tongue with some almost roasted malt flavors as well. By the end the sweetness has faded some and the beer is more dry in nature. In the middle of the taste as the roasted flavor enter and the sugar flavor fades, the presence of the some cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice also develop. In the end a spiced pumpkin flavor is left to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average in terms of thickness and is average in its level of carbonation as well. For the pumpkin flavors the carbonation suits it well, but the body would have been better suited if it were a bit thicker. Overall – Ah… It was a nice beer to try but not one I would really go to on any occasion.

Reviewed from notes. This was poured into a pint glass. The appearance was a ruddy orange to brown color with a decent one finger white foamy head that dissipated within less than a minute. The lacing was somewhat thick and not so clingy as it slid right into the body. The smell had a good amount of pumpkin with some light ginger, allspice and light cinnamon. The taste took those flavorings and seemed to have combined them all nicely. On the palate, this one sat fairly light at times, but did end up displaying sometimes a resemblance to a medium body. There’s a decent sessionable aspect to this one. Overall, this is definitely one of the better pumpkin ales on the market. I would love to get this again if ever possible.

The body has a deep orange amber color with a cloudy look. The pour produces a one finger thick white cap of foam. It slowly fades down to just a very thin layer of bubbles that makes a little slice lacing on the glass. The aroma has a spicy, vegetable/squash like bouquet with some light toasted malt notes as well. Up front there are solid spice flavors of cinnamon, allspice and clove with some roasted pumpkin and toasted malt underneath. The finish sees a good balance of flavor as the spicy hops creeps in and adds some nice bitterness to the mix. The palate has a solid medium body with average carbonation and a mellow drinkable texture.

12 oz bottle from notes. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have mild pumpkin, the usual suspects when it comes to spices, bready with some light earthy character toward the finish. Decent, but there are many more out there that are better.

from Mondial de la Bière 2013, Mulhouse - pours a cloudy dark orange beer under a long lasting pale beige foam; fair aroma of pumpkins, light earthy; pretty sweet and with a good malt backbone; fairly tasty and with a light earthy bitterness; long aftertaste of pumpkin - pretty nice for this kind of beer

This autumn brew has a good spicy pumpkin aroma. The flavor is of sweet malt, mild spice, and more hops bitterness than is typical for pumpkin ales. It’s fairly good, just nothing special.

Pours cloudy golden orange. Heavily carbonated, lots of head and lacing. Flavors are brown sugar, honey, slight citrus, and spices. Tastes sweet, with nutmeg, cinnamon, and brown sugar. A traditional pumpkin--nothing special.

Good tasting Pumpkin Ale. I think it’s because it’s made with the puree that it gives it such taste. Pumpkin and Cinnamon. This is what I’m looking for in a Pumpkin Ale. Good beer.
