COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Bottle. The pour was a cloudy medium brownish amber with an average sized (1-2 finger) foamy very, very pale orange head that lasted throughout and had excellent lacing that coated the glass. The aroma was of a light bread malt and a sweet yeast with notes of brown sugar, nutmeg cinnamon and a strong hint of some bitter spices. The taste was sweet and mildly acidic with a note of cinnamon and brown sugar at first then became mildly bitter with a note of nutmeg and spices with a harsh bite of pumpkin rind at the finish. The flavor lasted an average duration but left a not so likeable harshness at the end. Mouthfeel was light to medium in body and creamy in texture with a mild carbonation. Overall not your typical Pumpkin Ale. I found it rather bland with too much of a bitter bite at the end and not enough flavor from the spices or the pumpkin.

Lost rating from last fall. Nice spice aroma. Hoppier than the typical pumpkin ale, at the expense of the pumpkin itself, it seems. Not bad but there are far better choices out there.
