Commercial Description:
The Smuttynose Big BEER Series: big beers in big bottles, released seasonally in very limited quantities. Olive, iconic mascot & spirit guide of our brewery, first appeared on our Old Brown Dog label & has returned, thirteen years later, to pose for our Really Old Brown Dog, a luscious, malt-rich, full bodied "old ale" featuring deep notes of complex fruit. Much like our beloved Olive, this beer will mellow & age gracefully.

Thanks SecretSanta. Pours a hazy mahogany with big almond head that stay and leaves great lacing. Aroma is sweet rich malts, caramel, brown sugar. Flavor is much the same, sweet rich malt, lots of caramel and brown sugar but with a roasted touch in background. Smokey finish and floral hops really come out. The more it warms the roastiness comes through more with a toffee and nutty taste as well. Medium mouthfeel with lots of carbonation. Really let this beer warms.

Pours a lightly hazy brown with tons of ruby red highlights and a medium creamy/bubbly off white head that laced. Aroma of nuts, vanilla, some dark fruits, caramel, toffee, brown sugar and some hints of citrus. Flavors of mixed nuts, toffee, toasted malts, hints of chocolate, some hints of smoke, vanilla and caramel. Reminds me more of a big brown ale than it does an Old Ale.

Pours a clear reddish amber color with a thin offwhite head. The aroma has nuts, caramel, spices with a good malt presence. Flavor of malt, nuts, caramel and spices. The body is light with a liquorous texture and soft carbonation.

My Bottom Line:
Expressive leafy hops permeate the fruity caramel-covered almonds offered by the chewy maltiness. Very drinkable and nourishing, this bitter Old Ale is a fine pint for those cool autumn evenings.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam laces atop the deep copper.
-The slow yet expansive carbonation and the suave maltiness combine for a wealthy mouthfeel.
-Earth-laden mushrooms render complexity.
-The hops perceived in the aroma are inappropriate, to my tastes anyway.
-The aroma was not enticing enough; I would have liked a juicier malt apport.

Bottle; 2007 vintage.
