Commercial Description:
The Smuttynose Big BEER Series: big beers in big bottles, released seasonally in very limited quantities. Olive, iconic mascot & spirit guide of our brewery, first appeared on our Old Brown Dog label & has returned, thirteen years later, to pose for our Really Old Brown Dog, a luscious, malt-rich, full bodied "old ale" featuring deep notes of complex fruit. Much like our beloved Olive, this beer will mellow & age gracefully.

8.17.07 On tap at Andy’s Corner Bar. Really kind of great. While nothing is overly standout about the brew, it has a nice complex of flavors that make me wish I had another (or two)

Vinegary note underscores the sweet malts and bubblegum, dark malts and vinous dark fruits in the aroma. Clear brown body is topped by a low off white head that recedes to ring. Sweet and boozey with a dark malt bitterness that cuts through nicely. Fruity flavours are lasting in the aftertaste. Dry and somewhat astringent medium body with fair to moderate carbonation. Bottle sampled with Altair, beerbuzzmontreal, Cathschlag, Glouglouburp, Goldorak, MartinT, muzzlehatch and Yowie.

Courtesy dsnowden. Pours a hazy light brown with a small light tan head. Mild malty aroma, slight nuttiness, but not too strong. Maybe a little sweetness in there too. The taste has a nice flavor to it. Malts are pretty heavy, and seem to be the dominant flavor, along with a little sweet cinnamon. Slight bitterness in the finish, which lingered somewhat in the aftertaste. Overall, very mild beer, but not a bad brown.

Bottle: The aroma is basically just caramel with a little bit of fruit I expected to find more in the aroma, but really couldn’t find more than that. It pours a hazy reddish-orange with a small off-white head. The flavor starts with caramel, toffee, and fruit and it sticks to that combination from start to finish. Not bad, but a little one-dimensional and simple for an Old Ale. It’s medium bodied, slightly syrupy, with mild carbonation.

Warm amber body with a fading, off-white head. Decent malty aroma with notes of bread crusts, grapes, and fine tea. Fairly sweet, but complex malt profile in the flavor with balancing herbal bitterness. Smooth body with nice medium texture. A solid, subtle, and delicate old ale.

Thanks for the growler from Eyedrinkale! Pours with little head, but some nice small bubble lacing that fades quickly. Nice mild hoppy malty aroma on first pour, but then fades quickly. Deep reddish brown color. Medium body. on the sweeter size, but I wouldn’t call it sweet. Medium body. Flavor is mild, nutty. A good beer, nothing off.
