Commercial Description:
The Smuttynose Big BEER Series: big beers in big bottles, released seasonally in very limited quantities. Olive, iconic mascot & spirit guide of our brewery, first appeared on our Old Brown Dog label & has returned, thirteen years later, to pose for our Really Old Brown Dog, a luscious, malt-rich, full bodied "old ale" featuring deep notes of complex fruit. Much like our beloved Olive, this beer will mellow & age gracefully.

On tap at HDG. One of my favorite styles and this one is as roasty as any that I’ve tried. The alcohol is still pretty apparent and I get some toffee and nuts in this. Lacking in the head retention dept though but really tasty.

Bottle. Dark amber almost brown pour. Thick full off white head. Aroma is somewhat sour but with some sugars. Not overly powerful. Somewhat flat soft palate. Sweet taste with a malty aftertaste.

Bottle. Cloudy, hazy, dirty red orange. Apricot, orange, citrusy, hoppy. Sweet, acidic, citrusy to the tongue - fades quickly. No bite or residual flavoring . . . wish there was.

22oz. Bottle: Aroma is lightly sweet. Smells very malty with with notes of chocolate, walnut, oak, bread, and roasting. Poured amber in color with a big, creamy, rocky, an head that lasted throughout. Very good lacing. Cloudy. Sparkling. Floating particles. Flavor is light to medium sweet. Tastes very malty with notes of chocolate, bread, roasting, hazelnut, nuts, oak, and a little rye. Medium body. Dry, chalky texture. Soft to average carbonation. Dry, malty finish. Overall, pretty good.

22 oz. bottle. Wow. This is a very solid Smuttynose beer. Almost brown pour, with a nice thick head. Aroma is malty, with roasted notes, chocolate, and nuts. Taste was pretty refreshing and has a very smooth and rich flavor.

Big beer series...pours a deep dark orange, almost light brown, cloudy color with a nice frothy head. The lacing was nice with solid rings around the mug. The scent was of malt, vanilla, carmel and spice. The taste was very refreshing with some hoppy tones and notes of complexity and bitterness. A very beautiful Old Ale.

Bottle. Sweet malty aroma, roasty and earthy with some burnt chocolate and lots of nuttiness. Garnet-brown body, clear with a large soapy and lacing beige head. Taste is medium-bitter with lots of roast and nuts, earth and toffee. Dry! Mouthfeel is medium with loads of dryness, aftertaste bone dry with roast and a minute lick of hops. One of the better browns I’ve had, but a bit hard to finish up.

Bottle provided to me by Bmartin sometime ago. Pours out a brown color with a tan head on it. Smell is sweet and has some caramel on the nose. Somewhat fruity smelling as well. Taste is sweet and rich, not really any alcohol detected. Some sweet vanilla flavors too. Interesting beer, and as usual from Smutty, its worth trying. I will give my other bottle a shot in a year or so. Not bad, thanks.
