Commercial Description:
The Smuttynose Big BEER Series: big beers in big bottles, released seasonally in very limited quantities. Olive, iconic mascot & spirit guide of our brewery, first appeared on our Old Brown Dog label & has returned, thirteen years later, to pose for our Really Old Brown Dog, a luscious, malt-rich, full bodied "old ale" featuring deep notes of complex fruit. Much like our beloved Olive, this beer will mellow & age gracefully.

Bottle: Pours a hazy copper color with a light tan head. Aroma, some alcohol, molasses, and caramel, some fruits. Flavor, malty, caramel, brown sugar, earthy notes. Very smooth, some light bitterness. Very good stuff.

22oz bottle, courtesy of artusory. Thanks, Ryan! Pours a clear cherry color; fluffy, off-white head with good retention and lacing. Candy sugar and dried fruits in the aroma. Medium-to-full, chewy mouthfeel: plenty of dried fruits and brown sugar; pleasant, balancing citrus and floral hop bitterness; nice density and balance. Lengthy, candy sugar and fruit finish; slightly dry.

This is on draft at the Bodega Brew Pub downtown La Crosse, Wisconsin. Poured with a nice slightly redish brown color and tan head. Aroma and flavor were like a regular brown ale but with some raisins, fortified wine, and barley wine added in. Interesting beer, but in this case I do prefer the orginal OBD.

Hazy deep ruby brown body with a medium creamy light brown head. Sweet caramel molassas and rum soaked fruit with a hint of peat. Sweet caramel, chocolate and coffee flavors with light roasted malt, molassas, and a hint of peat. Nutty malty aftertaste.

Bottle, pour was deep orange brown, typical old-ale / english barleywine like, light sedimentation visible at the end of the bottle, off white grain chunks or something. Weak head but decent lacing. The aroma was raisins, molasses, a touch of roast. The flavor was dark raisins, molasses, roasted malts (firm in the roast area), minty, and firmly hopped, much moreso than other old ales out there. Mouthfeel was full and robust, a firm brown ale base seemingly behind this, hopped with a zing amidst the firm roastiness. An enjoyable beer.

A nice looking brown/orange colored ale, with a dense rocky head. The palate is dry and slightly acidic; initially I thought the beer was going to be a sugar bomb. However, the palate is making me thirsty as I drink the beer. The finish lingers on with a nice hop bitterness. Overall, it is beer that keeps me interested, but is lacking the complexity to make it stick out in a crowd.

22oz bottle shared by Sliffy! - Pours dark brown with a short tan head that stays fairly well. Aromas of caramel, molasses, chocolate, and some roasted malts. Flavor included lots of caramel, some roasted notes , molasses, a bit of raisin and a fair herbal hop presence throughout. Medium body good and smooth with just a bit of dryness at the finish. I liked this one!

Bu au Post-Mondial 07. Ruby caramelisé, mince collet. Arome faible de malte peu caramelisé et peu épicé. Goût de malte ordianair, rien de spécial.
