Commercial Description:
The Smuttynose Big BEER Series: big beers in big bottles, released seasonally in very limited quantities. Olive, iconic mascot & spirit guide of our brewery, first appeared on our Old Brown Dog label & has returned, thirteen years later, to pose for our Really Old Brown Dog, a luscious, malt-rich, full bodied "old ale" featuring deep notes of complex fruit. Much like our beloved Olive, this beer will mellow & age gracefully.

Pours with a deep amber body topped by a medium thick head with a good lacing. It’s sweet and biscuity with lots of alcohol notes and a lot of bitterness. Hot and highly carbonated.

22oz from BOTW. Aroma is alcoholic and mildly malty. The flavors are really raw and alcoholic. I’m pretty disappointed. Maybe I’m missing something.

22oz bottle from Wolf. Dark amber/brown color with an off-white head. Slightly sweet a little dark fruit in aroma. Very smooth and flavorful, some caramel some more (subtle) dark fruits, very good. I miss my little Brown Dog, R.I.P Honey.

650 ml, bottle conditioned in 2008. Clear, deep garnet with a small disc of cream above. Aroma of sweet cherry, raisins and light oak. Flavors of cherry cough drop, prunes, walnut and marshmallow. Finish is well-dried by notes of oak, sherry and brandy that make this one taste way more than 7%. Medium-heavy body is lightly carbonated and slightly chewy.

22oz brown glass pry-top. "Bottled Conditioned in 2008." Appearance: Thin bone-white head, spotting on the glass. Deep red mahogany. Cristal-clear. Nose: Alcoholic fruity esters, sweet biscuit (cookie), dried orange peel, malted milk, molasses. Palate: Medium bodied and malt-ball goodness! Seriously, I’m blown away by this...Reminds me of a drier Madeira, from Bual or Malmsey grapes (low of the mountain). Oxidative notes of caramel and nuts, paper glue, cashew, caramelized palm sugar. Long, changing finish with some burn at the back of the throat. Notes: I seriously misjudged this beer the first time I had it (2 or so years ago)! This beer has a lot going on, lots of similarities to oxidized dessert wines (Madeira, tawny/Colheita ports, Oloroso/PX sherries, etc.). I think it’s a little disjointed right now, but that it will fall into place in the next 6 months or so. Seriously good.

I BOUGHT BROWN DOG ALE YEARS AGO BECAUSE OLIVE REMINDED ME OF MY LAB. SO WHEN I SEEN THE PICTURE OF OLIVE AGAIN I SWORE MY DOG IS STILL ON THE COVER HAVING AGED THE SAME. A VERY GOOD BEER STRONG MALT FLAVOR WITH A NICE BROWN COLOR. A GREAT BEER I WILL BUY THIS AGAIN.
