Commercial Description:
The Smuttynose Big BEER Series: big beers in big bottles, released seasonally in very limited quantities. Olive, iconic mascot & spirit guide of our brewery, first appeared on our Old Brown Dog label & has returned, thirteen years later, to pose for our Really Old Brown Dog, a luscious, malt-rich, full bodied "old ale" featuring deep notes of complex fruit. Much like our beloved Olive, this beer will mellow & age gracefully.

This is a cloudy one, the dark brown body is translucent at best. Big malts in the aroma, mostly nuts. There’s a little heat in the swallow. I’d like to see the alcohol a little better concealed in a beer that’s only 7%.

Bomber from tweety and brewsandbbq. Pours brownish red with a tan head. Nose is sweet and malty. Taste is rich and malty with a big kick of fruit that is impossible to miss. Overall its a pretty interesting interpretation of the style, with a lot of complexity and intricacies. I have to agree with JPDIPSO, it tastes much hotter for some reason than 7% listed.

Bottle. Pours deep dark amber with quickly dissipating head. Aroma is not strong but definite malt sweetness, bubblegum, and fruit with fig and port. Thick full mouthfee if not a bit syrupy. Flavor is all malt with minimal fruitiness. Nice slightly hoppy finish which breaks up the sweetness. Bit of alcohol but not too noticeable. Very good stuff.

(22 oz. bottle (2008) from McKean and Charles) A warm and malty treat...Pours hazy tawny amberish brown. Aroma of milk chocolate, earth/leather and light toasted caramel. Mouthfeel medium-full, a touch fizzy and just a touch sticky toward finish. Nice fine curtains and light weepy rings of lacing. Flavors of licorice, chocolate and toasty caramel with some tea and brown sugar. Warming alcohol presence if not a touch hot. Bitterness builds and provides a nice pinch through finish. Lingering bitterness in aftertaste along with chocolate and licorice/Fisherman’s Friend. Enjoyed this as much as any Smuttynose I’ve had.

22oz. Bottle. 2008 Batch. Ruddy brown color with an off white head. Aroma of wood and leather, could be described as earthy. Flavor is dominated by malt, but is not overly sweet. Also exhibits traces of vanilla, raisins, caramel, toffee and oddly some type of tropical fruit (pineapple?). Fairly well carbonated with a mildly syrupy and sticky mouthfeel. Long lasting and fruity in the finish, almost tangy with a note of alcohol warmth. Good stuff.

Man did I like this more than expected. No strange bitter hop flavor from some other Smuttys I have had. Blew away regular dog. Sweet and malty and maybe some raisin. Smooth and drinkable with just the right amount of hops to balance out the rich body.
