Commercial Description:
The Smuttynose Big BEER Series: big beers in big bottles, released seasonally in very limited quantities. Olive, iconic mascot & spirit guide of our brewery, first appeared on our Old Brown Dog label & has returned, thirteen years later, to pose for our Really Old Brown Dog, a luscious, malt-rich, full bodied "old ale" featuring deep notes of complex fruit. Much like our beloved Olive, this beer will mellow & age gracefully.

Draught at Rustico. Small white head on top of a brown-deep amber colored body. The aroma is malty, and fruity with notes of caramel, earth, and pineapple. Quite fruity flavored, like the fermentation was a bit high; light alcohol, earthy bitterness, wood, vanilla, and brown sugar as well. Harshly over-carbonated palate feel. There were hints of sweet, fruity malty flavors that were somewhat promising, but the harsh mouthfeel prevented me from getting into this at all.

Bomber of the 2008. Beautiful mahogany pour. Profound aroma of sweet plums, leather and caramel, hints of melon and tropical fruit. Smooth, sweet flavor with a bit of drying hops on the finish. Light, leathery bitter aftertaste. Nice.

2007 bomber. Poured hazy medium brown with a short-lived cap of beige head. The aroma picked up brown sugar and aged caramel sweetness with overtones of sour fruit skins and a little orange.. smelled like it kinda turned the corner. The flavor also showed a solid dose of sourage in the form of orange zest and malt vinegar.. caramel and brown sugar at the core.. bitterness was light and herbal.. warm finish. Medium-bodied and again sour on the palate.. carbonation was moderate-to-high.. never really came together. Perhaps this is better fresh.

Bottle. Strong malty aroma, with ripe fruit. Deep red body, creamy tan head. Flavor is of ripe fruit, malt, nuts, and a little dash of hoppy bitterness to get your attention further. An excellent beer. (And of course the best label art in the business.)

22 ounce bottle shared by Alraomon. Thanks! Pours a clear orange-red color with a medium head. Average head retention and lacing. Fruity aroma with mixed berries, cherries, green apple and grain. Taste is caramel, spice, nuttiness sweet malts, tea tree and the same berry-like fruit notes. Full bodied with some slight alcohol warmth. -

Pours a rich mahogany with a large tan head and good lacing. Aroma of dark fruits and malts. Complex and deep flavors of sweet fruit, roasted malts, alcohol, and some toffee. This is a very good beer.
