The Smuttynose Big BEER Series: big beers in big bottles, released seasonally in very limited quantities. Olive, iconic mascot & spirit guide of our brewery, first appeared on our Old Brown Dog label & has returned, thirteen years later, to pose for our Really Old Brown Dog, a luscious, malt-rich, full bodied "old ale" featuring deep notes of complex fruit. Much like our beloved Olive, this beer will mellow & age gracefully.

2007 at raleigh rare beer fest. Nice full bodied beer that has enough rich taste to overcome a tired palate. Would like to have tried this side by side with a newer one to see how it held up but alas i couldnt. Glad to try it though.

Baby bourbon! Ruby copper in color and a nice heady aroma. Sweet vanilla up front with a boozy backside. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Sampled at Raleigh Rare and Vintage 2013. Vintage 2007. Hazy amber pour with ring of offwhite head. Sweet, but lightly hoppy nose. Almost syrupy on the flavor. A little boozy. Citrusy and a bit oxidized. caramel. alright, but overall, kinda meh.

thx to beermefitz, compared next to a 2012 bottle, I actually like this older one a bit better. Oxidation is certainly there, but flavors have withstood mostly and are quite pleasant, nice and nutty.

Cloudy chocolate brown beer with a good cream coloured head. Softish palate, a bit dry. Rich malt with a brandy tone. Smooth and creamy - well offset by good bittering hops that come to the fore in the creamy finish. Quite a contrast but very drinkable.

Pours a dark brown with lots of head and lacing, nose is brown sugar, dried fruit and aldehydes. First sip is caramel, vanila bean, bruins, and booze. FFinish is slight bitterness like coffee.

Nice looks, red and clear and foamy. Smells slightly funky, and very, very sweet. Which goes well to describe the flavor. In fact, the only trait this beer shares with regular Old Brown Dog is the name. Really Old gets really sweet really fast, the sugary heart of the brew overwhelming any subtle pleasures. More hops could temper this Bit-O-Honey nature, but the needed bitterness never shows. The cloying finish betrays the meager 7% ABV. Worth trying, just not worth trying again. (2/2/09)

Bottle I found at the store from 2008. Pours brown with a bit of haze and some tan head. Nice malty aroma with caramel, some dark fruit, dates. Taste is malty sweetness up front with some fruit, toffee. Faint bitterness on the finish. Very nice.
