Commercial Description:
The Smuttynose Big BEER Series: big beers in big bottles, released seasonally in very limited quantities. Olive, iconic mascot & spirit guide of our brewery, first appeared on our Old Brown Dog label & has returned, thirteen years later, to pose for our Really Old Brown Dog, a luscious, malt-rich, full bodied "old ale" featuring deep notes of complex fruit. Much like our beloved Olive, this beer will mellow & age gracefully.

Amber colour. Very hazy. Nutty, figgy aroma with deep caramel. Big body. Chewy, with heavy caramel notes and accents of nuts, apple skins. Robust earthy bitterness carries this beer.

(22oz bottle, vintage 2007) Lovely medium beige head that leaves nice lacing, atop light hazed copper body with yeast flecks at the glass bottom. Aroma is moderately sweet, toffee/caramel, some wood, sherry, light cherry. Taste is moderately sweet, toffee/caramel, some cognac, wood, bittersweet chocolate, earthy/grapefruit. Soft and very smooth medium-full body. Excellent sipping beer.

22oz bottle. 2007 vintage. Poured a deeper amberish color with a larger sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, toasted nuttiness, and a little fruity. Tastes of caramel, nuts, lighter fruitiness, toasty, and some woodiness.

Bottle... Lightly hazed blend of hues... mahogany, pink, rust, red and orange... with a mid-sized, frothy, white head. Great retention. Beautiful beer, really. The aroma is a toffee, white chocolate and mandarin orange blend. Solid, sweet, roasted malt flavor with heavy, grapefruit bitterness to match. Full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and tingly carbonation. Lengthy, toasted, bone-dry finish. Thanks to boboski for splitting the bottle with me!

Transparent bright copper bronze with a pretty-nicely lacing light tan head. Aroma of slightly earthy caramel malty sweet with a touch of tartness and grain. Body starts fairly full and earthy with nice bittersweet malty and slightly citrusy hoppy balance. A decently authentic and drinkable brew.

22oz bottle-thanks to jwc215 for sharing-pours a foamy tan head and hazy deep red color with particles. Aroma is dark fruit, medium malt-sweet, faint biscuity. Taste is dark fruit, medium malt-sweet/chocolate, faint hops nicely comes through. Nice. OK carbonation.
