Commercial Description:
The Smuttynose Big BEER Series: big beers in big bottles, released seasonally in very limited quantities. Olive, iconic mascot & spirit guide of our brewery, first appeared on our Old Brown Dog label & has returned, thirteen years later, to pose for our Really Old Brown Dog, a luscious, malt-rich, full bodied "old ale" featuring deep notes of complex fruit. Much like our beloved Olive, this beer will mellow & age gracefully.

A- Pours an auburn hue with a small head which sinks to nothingness. S- Old Ale’s are quickly becoming my favorite style because I just love to stick my nose in them. Full malty aroma leaning toward the caramel side of the spectrum with a subtle sweetness. It seems like it might be a little too light from the smell but we will see. T- Taste is full and starts off sweet and caramely with touchs of raisin and that leads into a barage of hops at the end. I think after a year when the hops die down a bit this will be drinking extremely well but even now it is delicious. M- Lots of carbonation and fairly thick. D- I think the drinkability is about on par with the abv, a bit less than a session beer but it’s nice to enjoy and I could definitely drink multiple glasses.

Pours a rich mahogany with a large tan head and good lacing. Aroma of dark fruits and malts. Complex and deep flavors of sweet fruit, roasted malts, alcohol, and some toffee. This is a very good beer.

Bottle. Strong malty aroma, with ripe fruit. Deep red body, creamy tan head. Flavor is of ripe fruit, malt, nuts, and a little dash of hoppy bitterness to get your attention further. An excellent beer. (And of course the best label art in the business.)

Medium sized light tan head, retention is good with decent lacing. Lightly hazy brown with a red glow. Nose is nicely fruity with notes of caramel and maybe somee cocoa. Medium body, coating on the palate, nice carbonation, gentle. Medium sweet malts, caramel a hint of chocolate, bready with a pleasent fruitiness, maybe some citrus notes swimming around also, lightly earthy. Lightly sweet finish, malty and lasting. A swell drink! Bomber acquired a statelineliquors.

Nice slightly hazy beautiful brown coloured body with a nice sized tan head that tops the beer, but fades fast. Aroma of nuts, malt, must (like a basement), caramel, alcohol and a light hoppiness picked up. Definitely an old-style smell to it - good for the style. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong spicey flvaours along with some nuts and malt are the most noticeable. Aftertaste shows some lingering caramel and a very light hoppiness along with some of the musty cardboardie type flavours. Overall, a good flavoured beer that lasts and doesn’t become bitter at all. Definitely one to try if you can find this one at all. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased at Whole Foods in Vienna, Virginia on 30-April-2007.

Bottle: Muddy copper, light head and lacing. Nose of toast and biscuit, sweet raspberry, sherry and oak. The flavor is smooth, a touch of alcohol, but a full malty biscuity mouthfeel. Light roast and fig, nice full bodied malty character. Good! Thanks Jake!

Poured an amber color with a medium sized, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel malts, vanilla, roast, toffee, nuts, toast, and light smoke. Taste of chocolate, caramel, raisins, maple, roast, toffee malts, light citrus, dried fruits, and a dry, lightly alcoholic finish.
