4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Reviewed from notes.
This was poured into a pint glass and a snifter.
The head lasted longer in the snifter than the pint glass but that was the only difference.
The rest of the appearance had a nice looking hazy amber to brown to even some light black edges. There was about a finger’s worth of white foaminess coating the top of the beer. The lacing was somewhat speckled and had a glossy foaminess encircling both glasses.
The smell took some light milk chocolate and roasted to a nice aromatic vanilla nuttiness. I believe the bottle I had was only two weeks old as I could definitely smell the alcohol on it.
The taste took all of those previously mentioned smells along with the alcohol and added a nice light oakiness invading my taste buds.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with more of a sipping sort of quality to it. This one is exactly sessionable as one might think.
Overall, though I had this super fresh when I had it, I wouldn’t mind getting another one some day to age. This one definitely makes me miss New England as it was one of my all time favorite old ales.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from a Georgia trader. Thanks!
A: Mostly opaque brown color with an off white head. Decent lacing.
N: Caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and syrup. Grain and wood. Some char. Raisin and prune.
T: Flat sweetness. Moderate bitterness.
M: Medium heavy. A little sticky.
O: A beer that grows on me the more I drink it. The calmness and lack of alcohol make this an easy one to get through.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
2012 bottle to snifter. Pretty nutmeg brown color pour with an off white collar for a head; no lacing. Brown sugar nose and flavor. Some good hop bitterness balances well. Slightly boozy which serves to make it a nice sipper. Good now but could probably hang on for another 1-2 years of cellaring.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Vintage bottle...May 2012. Clear brown, pasty white two finger head. Aroma is earth, malt, chocolate, molasses, dark fruits, plum, spice. Flavor is the same. Chocolate is smooth. It comes out here. Slightly burnt malt. Earth tones everywhere. Really complex. Great beer. It’s delicious!

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
22 ounce bottle into snifter, 2012 vintage bottling. Pours fairly crystal clear deep ruby red color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big biscuit, caramel, toast, molasses, brown sugar, light chocolate, raisin, plum, nuttiness, vanilla, toffee, herbal, oak, light leather, and toasted earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, oak, and yeast ester flavors; with great strength. Taste of caramel, biscuit, toast, brown sugar, molasses, light chocolate, raisin, plum, nuttiness, herbal, vanilla, toffee, oak, light leather, and toast/oak earthiness. Minimal earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, biscuit, toast, molasses, brown sugar, light chocolate, raisin, plum, nuttiness, herbal, toffee, oak, vanilla, light leather, and toast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity and balance of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, and oak flavors; with zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a moderately creamy, smooth, and fairy slick/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding old ale style. All around awesome complexity and balance of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast ester, and oak flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Poured from a bomber into a pint glass. Pours a clear medium amber with a moderate khaki head which fades quickly but leaves good lacing. Nose is faint, but notes of caramel and medium roast malt. Taste is smooth and has notes of malt and caramel. Finish is long and pleasant, with a creamy mouthfeel. Very good.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft to taster. Looks good for the style; a fairly transparent amberish orange with foamy off-white head that steadily dissipates iinto sticky lacing. Smells solid; sweet and malty, but not cloying. Tastes like it smells with a solid mouthfeel. Enjoyable, and drinks easier than its abv suggests.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle poured into a snifter glass. Faded brown appearance like worn out leather and very little foam on top. Smells like liquor, brandy maybe, and plums or cranberry-raisins. Tastes like fermented fruit, assertive alcohol presence. It takes a while to polish off a glass of this stuff. Light side of medium bodied. Mild carbonation. This could be a nice beer to have at the end of a big meal or at the very least, on a full stomach. Otherwise, it's a rocky ride and the high abv doesn't hide itself in the taste.
