One of the challenges here at Smuttynose is that we don’t have a pilot system, so we sometimes have to adjust recipes over time. This year’s version really seems to have hit that sweet spot of what we were attempting. Unlike the first vintage, which had a porter/chocolate character, we wanted something between an old ale and a barleywine. To add another element of complexity, we aged this vintage for one month on medium toast oak chips. Enjoy!

355 bottle from SB. 11.1%. Best by may 2017. Clear copper, 1-2 finger beige head. Spicy sweet malty aroma with notes of caramel, raw sugar, tobacco, raisins and dates and a big hit of alcohol. Sweet peppery malty taste with caramel, tobacco, figs and dates, vanilla fudge and hot alcohol. Big body, soft carbonation and an oily sticky texture. Pretty nice rich malty flavours, but a bit hot and tobacco peppery. Could do with some aging.

2015 vintage. Pours clear, dark amber with a tiny beige head. Aroma is mostly sweet, some herbal hops, caramel malt, slight wood. Taste is also mostly sweet, caramel malt, some chocolate, marzipan and nuts, slight pear and alcohol. Medium body, soft carbonation, round mouth feel, a bit dry. Dry, slightly bitter after taste, a wee bit warming feeling.
Surprisingly soft/mellow for a 11% beer. Good, but I assumed it would be bigger.

I was actually expecting a brown - not really a fan - decent aroma of alcohol and burnt sugar - taste is medicinal, tongue tingling hops (like that damn dortmunder), and overly syrupy sweetness. swing and miss from the maker of my favorite all time beer.

Tap. Pours clear dark brown amber with huge frothy beige head, long lasting. Aroma is really intense. Oak, toast, malt, fruity. The oak is quite toasty and has some acidity. Fruitiness is packed with tart and sour cherries. Bready malts to mellow it out. Almost some sweet marzipan and yam. Fruity berries and slight cocoa. Taste is more chocolatey with sweet and sour cherries. Marzipan and yammy malts again. Really creamy body with some carbonation. Again loads of berries and toast. Finish is really dry with some spicy oak, almost peppery. Nice one, just a touch of funk.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Pours brown with a nice beige head and smells faintly spices and alcohol. The taste is classic stock ale, a brilliant balance between the malt and the hop bitterness. It lives in your mouth for quite some time. The texture is silky smooth. Excellent stuff.

Bought this at the release in Sweden in August.
I was a little dissapointed with Smuttynose Old Brown Dog so I only got one bottle. We’ll se if I have to get back and have som more :)

Poured into a sniffer. Dark red-brown, clear, beer with a tiny, beige, head that leaves a lot of lacing.

Nose: Red berries, dried fruit, caramel malt, biscuit, nuts and butter.
Taste: Brown sugar, toffee, biscuit, vanilla, molasses and a little bit of oak.
Body: Medium to full body. Light carbonation. ABV 11% ?? It can’t be true? It’s very well hidden. Smooth taste. A little bit to "simple" body - I would like more compexity.

Great beer but not up to Founders Curmudgeon.
