One of the challenges here at Smuttynose is that we don’t have a pilot system, so we sometimes have to adjust recipes over time. This year’s version really seems to have hit that sweet spot of what we were attempting. Unlike the first vintage, which had a porter/chocolate character, we wanted something between an old ale and a barleywine. To add another element of complexity, we aged this vintage for one month on medium toast oak chips. Enjoy!

Brown butter nose, malty, and a deep brown color. Does have the essence of a porter without being too heavy-- perhaps more aged in a barrel.

Leather, alcohol, dried fruit, nuts, and toffee. Tastes quite good. However, it’s very very thin, and that almost ruins it. This beer desperately needs some body to it.

Bottle from Brewtopia. Beautiful clear reddish brown with eggshell head and lace. Toasted wooded caramel covered fruity sweet aroma that just borders on cough syrup but thankfully doesn’t quite get there. Sweet (!) toasted caramel and ripe fruit with woody herbal lingering bitterness and lingering sweetness. Full body. Slight cloy just short of cough syrupy with unpleasant lingering herbal woody bitterness. Definitely not my kind of beer.

Sweet floral aromas and some berries. Light off white head and dark amber body. Sweet malty flavor with some semi sweet berry flavor and a minor cocoa and warm vanilla undertone. Smooth on the palate.

Malty sweet aroma with notes of toffee and nuts. Appearance is a clear deep Amber with an off white head. Flavor has notes of nuts, caramel and a hint chocolate. Mouthfeel is medium thin with medium carbonation. Overall, it's a decent old ale. Needs more body though. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A brown body with a light brown head. No retention. Aroma was a mix of oak, vanilla and alcohol. A mild presence of toasted malts. Flavor seemed to have a nice vanilla character and some alcohol. Nothing too special to me ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aromas if dried fruit and caramel. Muddy brown in color. Caramel and alcohol taste slightly bitter with warming on the way down.

Mahogany in the glass. Thin off-white head dissipates with a bit of time. Aromas of toffee, boozy angel food cake, bread, and light oakiness. Silky and decently viscous. Full flavors of creme brûlée, bread, alcohol, and caramel on the first sip. Finish is long and sweet with a flutter of alcohol. A smooth sipper from Smutty.

Bottle, shared with Grippitis and others. Dark copper brown, thick beige head. Brown breadcrusts, brown sugar, milk chocolate, undertones of dark fruits, a little chewy. I really dug this.
