One of the challenges here at Smuttynose is that we don’t have a pilot system, so we sometimes have to adjust recipes over time. This year’s version really seems to have hit that sweet spot of what we were attempting. Unlike the first vintage, which had a porter/chocolate character, we wanted something between an old ale and a barleywine. To add another element of complexity, we aged this vintage for one month on medium toast oak chips. Enjoy!

This was a unique brew for sure. It smelled like a chocolatey porter - lots of toffee and chocolate with a touch of raisins and oak. The taste followed but was much more intense. Undertones of toast, chocolate and hops really satisfy the palate. The alcohol is very well hidden here so be careful ;-).

My Bottom Line:
Nut bread, roasted chestnuts and caramel in this effervescent strong ale.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam surrounds the misty dark amber.
-This was too bubbly for this type of strong brew.
-A light alcohol hit accompanies the balancing bitterness.
-Malts could be better defined.
-The finish is easy and the flavour profile simple.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with very little head that dissipates quickly. Aroma of malts and caramel. Taste of nuts and caramel with a bit of a sweet aftertaste.

Pours dark brown, slight head. Malt and caramel on the nose which follow on tasting with a malt nuttiness. Awesome complexity in this one. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at Rocky’s Sub Pub in Jeffersonville, IN. Pours brown with an orangish red hue. No real head and little lacing. Aroma and taste heavy on malts, caramel, dates, prunes. Almost sort of Belgian tasting. Very sweet with a nice long malty and sweet candy finish. Full body, moderate carbonation, oily texture. Very nice and tastey!

From the bottle, brown pour, white head, very malty, nutty, caramel, sugary, and fairly tasty. Good, but not great.

From 22 oz bottle. Poured a copper brown with little head that disappeared quickly. Decent lacing. Malty sweetness - almost as sweet as milk stout, but not bad in this case (I'm not a fan of milk stouts). ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Nutty, malty, boozy aroma. Very complex with flavors of nut, vanilla, dark chocolate, and alcohol. Fairly heavy. Finishes sweet with hint of alcohol. Wonderful. (from notes)
