One of the challenges here at Smuttynose is that we donít have a pilot system, so we sometimes have to adjust recipes over time. This yearís version really seems to have hit that sweet spot of what we were attempting. Unlike the first vintage, which had a porter/chocolate character, we wanted something between an old ale and a barleywine. To add another element of complexity, we aged this vintage for one month on medium toast oak chips. Enjoy!

Vintage bottle...May 2012. Clear brown, pasty white two finger head. Aroma is earth, malt, chocolate, molasses, dark fruits, plum, spice. Flavor is the same. Chocolate is smooth. It comes out here. Slightly burnt malt. Earth tones everywhere. Really complex. Great beer. Itís delicious!

Pours clear copper color with light tan head. Aromas of toffee, brown sugar, toasted malt and some dark fruits. Sweet toffee and plum flavors with toasted malt and a hint of oak. Full body with moderate carbonation and a syrupy mouthfeel.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, 2012 vintage bottling. Pours fairly crystal clear deep ruby red color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big biscuit, caramel, toast, molasses, brown sugar, light chocolate, raisin, plum, nuttiness, vanilla, toffee, herbal, oak, light leather, and toasted earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, oak, and yeast ester flavors; with great strength. Taste of caramel, biscuit, toast, brown sugar, molasses, light chocolate, raisin, plum, nuttiness, herbal, vanilla, toffee, oak, light leather, and toast/oak earthiness. Minimal earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, biscuit, toast, molasses, brown sugar, light chocolate, raisin, plum, nuttiness, herbal, toffee, oak, vanilla, light leather, and toast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity and balance of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, and oak flavors; with zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a moderately creamy, smooth, and fairy slick/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding old ale style. All around awesome complexity and balance of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast ester, and oak flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Tap at Lazy Dog. Dark brown in color with white head. Aroma of malts. Taste of malt and a little nutty. Bitter, hoppy aftertaste

Poured from a bomber into a pint glass. Pours a clear medium amber with a moderate khaki head which fades quickly but leaves good lacing. Nose is faint, but notes of caramel and medium roast malt. Taste is smooth and has notes of malt and caramel. Finish is long and pleasant, with a creamy mouthfeel. Very good.

Draft to taster. Looks good for the style; a fairly transparent amberish orange with foamy off-white head that steadily dissipates iinto sticky lacing. Smells solid; sweet and malty, but not cloying. Tastes like it smells with a solid mouthfeel. Enjoyable, and drinks easier than its abv suggests.

Bottle poured into a snifter glass. Faded brown appearance like worn out leather and very little foam on top. Smells like liquor, brandy maybe, and plums or cranberry-raisins. Tastes like fermented fruit, assertive alcohol presence. It takes a while to polish off a glass of this stuff. Light side of medium bodied. Mild carbonation. This could be a nice beer to have at the end of a big meal or at the very least, on a full stomach. Otherwise, it's a rocky ride and the high abv doesn't hide itself in the taste.

Nice crisp clear brown coloured body with a ruby-tinted body and a slightly muddied glow with a thin oily tan head. Aroma of alcohol, peat, chocolate, pit fruits, malt, ttoffee, earth, peanuts and a touch of light spices - very nice and fragrant. Full-bodied; Super rich chocolatey and malty flavours at first with a good raisin, fig and brown sugar flavour that really persists. Aftertaste shows a mellow and refined yeast bite with a good light fruit note, some mild oak and vanilla tastes and the underlying alcohol warmth. Overall, a very nice beer with the flavours hinging on an American Strong, but with enough complexity and depth to make it feel like a Barley Wine. Definitely worth trying if you can find this one, and even more so if you like Old Ales...or if you like Barley Wines, since this is closest to that! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Liqour Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 06-July-2013 for US$5.66 sampled at home in Washington on 24-January-2014.

A truly unique beer. Characteristics of a barleywine, but with a completely different malt sweetness and hop profile. I appreciate this brew for pushing my taste buds.

Sampled at an ESBLS tasting. It poured a caramel brown color with a light tan head. The aroma was of raisins and prunes with some spruced hops. The taste was malty, with caramel and hint of salt. It had a smooth finish and was an easy drinking for a big beer.
