One of the challenges here at Smuttynose is that we don’t have a pilot system, so we sometimes have to adjust recipes over time. This year’s version really seems to have hit that sweet spot of what we were attempting. Unlike the first vintage, which had a porter/chocolate character, we wanted something between an old ale and a barleywine. To add another element of complexity, we aged this vintage for one month on medium toast oak chips. Enjoy!

22 oz. bottle. Wow. Like it’s predecessor, this was a pretty solid Smuttynose beer. Poured a dark amber color with a medium sized off-white head. Aroma is smooth, boozy malts, with toasted characters, some rasin and/or dried fruits. Something to sip.

Transfer from BA review on 10-29-12- Poured from bottle into pint glass Appearance –Pours a hazy deep copper, almost brown color. Upon pouring there is a fizzy off white head that initially fades fast to leave a persistent white foam head on the brew. Smell – The aroma is overall very light. It consists of some roasted malt, a little bit of nuttiness and light caramel aroma. Taste – The flavor starts out an interesting blend of darker fruits, a bready flavor, as well as some caramel sweetness. As the taste advances further some roasted and nut flavors come to the tongue. As the flavor advances to the end, the bready flavors begin to fade, but some of the fruit flavors get quite a bit stronger and in the end a nice lightly roasted and sweet flavor is left to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer has a moderate amount of creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. Both are quite nice for the roasted, dark fruit, nut and bready flavors and really enhance them. Overall – The nice flavors, drinkability, and good smooth transitions of the brew make for a great one to go out and try (and try again).

Tap pour. Opaque brownish wine red. Beige head. Good webbing. Handsome. Plums and raisins lead the nose. Red wine notes too. All underlaid with molasses and brown sugar. Complex and inviting. Taste has nice round flavors. Full bodied. Sweet through and through, but semi bitter on finish. More dark fruits, some fresh and some candied. More molasses. Slow drinking, but enjoyable.

Pours amber coppery with thin, beige-creamy top, no lasing. Aroma intense, is full filled with rich toasted and roasted malts with hints of nutty and burnt, very malty indeed. Taste is medium sweet plus light bitter from darker malts, minimal hops. Medium bodied, tiny dry mouthfeel, slick texture a bit, a bit carbo-bubbly sharp palette, but very drinkable brown ale. Weird why in this category?

Reviewed from notes. This was poured into a pint glass and a snifter. The head lasted longer in the snifter than the pint glass but that was the only difference. The rest of the appearance had a nice looking hazy amber to brown to even some light black edges. There was about a finger’s worth of white foaminess coating the top of the beer. The lacing was somewhat speckled and had a glossy foaminess encircling both glasses. The smell took some light milk chocolate and roasted to a nice aromatic vanilla nuttiness. I believe the bottle I had was only two weeks old as I could definitely smell the alcohol on it. The taste took all of those previously mentioned smells along with the alcohol and added a nice light oakiness invading my taste buds. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with more of a sipping sort of quality to it. This one is exactly sessionable as one might think. Overall, though I had this super fresh when I had it, I wouldn’t mind getting another one some day to age. This one definitely makes me miss New England as it was one of my all time favorite old ales.

Bottle from a Georgia trader. Thanks! A: Mostly opaque brown color with an off white head. Decent lacing. N: Caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and syrup. Grain and wood. Some char. Raisin and prune. T: Flat sweetness. Moderate bitterness. M: Medium heavy. A little sticky. O: A beer that grows on me the more I drink it. The calmness and lack of alcohol make this an easy one to get through.
