Old Ale (also known as “Stock” Ale), is a full-bodied beer with high levels of dextrins. In times past, this beer was typically laid up to mature, hence the name. The color varies from rich, dark amber to a very dark brown. This style features fruity, vinuous & deep, malty flavors, giving it an almost port-like qualities. Sight acidity is not uncommon.
Olive, iconic mascot & spirit guide of our brewery, first appeared on our Old Brown Dog label in 1994 & returned, thirteen years later, to pose for our Really Old Brown Dog, a luscious, malt-rich, full bodied “old ale” featuring deep notes of complex fruit. Much like our beloved Olive, this beer will mellow & age gracefully.

Mahogany brown colour. Aroma is full of brown sugar and sweet malts. Also some red fruit sweetness. Flavour is also really malty. Feels really rich. Has a light dry bitterness in the finish.

I love the leathery caramel whack of a good old ale and this one delivers. It an ugly old dog, pouring murky mud water brown, but does hold a small wispy head. Hot alcohol burns in the finish, which evokes a whicky soaked caramel. Srightly carbonation adds to the experience. Leather, vanilla, molasses all play s part.

A balanced and warming beer. Not as dark and bitter as some might be. Maple syrupy and sweetly delicious. Alcohol is present, on the verge of overly so.

12oz into a tulip. 11.1%, March 2015. Pours a thick murky medium brown. Light fizzy head, lacing is light and sporadic. Aroma of figs, caramel, toffee, vanilla. Taste of sweet cider, burnt oak, boozy rum filled cakes, dried plums. Excellent sipper, really full of a great deal of brown/barely wine styles, glad I picked this one up in Keene, imported to and from Cabin season 9.
