3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Had this on tap at Battleship a little while ago. Pours a dark brown color with a thicker off white head. Aroma is full of roasty/toasty malts, chocolate, and resin. Taste seems still a little hot. Booze, malts, roastiness, and oak flavors. Leaves a boozy malt finish. I likes. I likes.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Total Wine in Boca Raton, FL. 750ml. Tulip at home. Pours a beautiful deep brown with a thick, frothy off-white/tan head. The head disappeared in about 2 minutes. Little lacing. Aroma rich with the woody cask aging, alcohol, caramel, roasted malts and toffee. The taste was fairly complex with caramel, rich toasted malts, toffee, and prunes. Alcohol is present, but not overwhelming. Well balanced. Slightly hoppy finish. Medium to full body and smooth mouth. It seems more old ale than barleywine but I can see some crossover. If they could have actually aged this for 6 months or so it would have probably been even better.

Very nicely-done old ale. Alcohol is definitely present but not overwhelming, more warming. Complex and enjoyable.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Really interesting brew. Definitely nailed with the old ale, barley wine combo. Definitely has a traditional ale taste with the sharpness and strong barley wine tones. Certainly has the alcohol content to make it a barley wine. Pours deep brown with malty hoppy flavor.

5/04/2011: Smuttynose Really Old Brown Dog Ale... Aroma: Really big caramel maltiness, aged rum, definitely alcohol in the nose, hint of sherry. Appearance: Elegant brown color, frothy and thick ivory-colored crown. Flavor: Deep, rich caramelized malts, mildly sweet and smoky, vanilla, dates, golden raisin, nice alcoholic strength. Palate: Medium-full body, smooth, good mouthfeel. Overall: Really, really nice beer, good strength, good flavor, very enjoyable.
Bottle shared by Tmoney99. Thanks Tom! Rating #186 for this beer.

1.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 4/20
on tap at the bocktown, nice place. let me tell you, I am not a fan of American wannah be barley wines which this is. not only that, it needs aging, it needs to be really really old. rather fruity sweet smell leaves no hint of the tongue torture within. smells like cotton candy. no co2. cloying and it has this warming sensation every where it goes down your throat. beer like whisky finish. cannot appreciate.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Market Square. Deep amber brown pour with a small bubbly white head.Toffee, caramel, brown sugar, dates & figs, nuts and earth in the nose. Sweet toffee and brown sugar entry fading into dark dried fruits with a bitter nutty finish. Noticeable alcohol heat in the finish. Would be a nice winter warmer. Probably could use some age too. Not bad though.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Lovely soft caramel, attenuated dates, raisins, but all quite mellow and melded.
My idea of what a brown ale should be

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
This was a unique brew for sure. It smelled like a chocolatey porter - lots of toffee and chocolate with a touch of raisins and oak. The taste followed but was much more intense. Undertones of toast, chocolate and hops really satisfy the palate. The alcohol is very well hidden here so be careful ;-).

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
My Bottom Line:
Nut bread, roasted chestnuts and caramel in this effervescent strong ale.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam surrounds the misty dark amber.
-This was too bubbly for this type of strong brew.
-A light alcohol hit accompanies the balancing bitterness.
-Malts could be better defined.
-The finish is easy and the flavour profile simple.
