3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Slightly hazy, old copper brown with a 1 finger, creamy beige head that has excellent retention and leaves a little lacing. Big malty aroma, sweet toffee, toast, honey roasted nuts, woody, buttery oak, crust, white bread, brown sugar, caramel coated granola sharp fruity esters and light earthy hops. Flavor is really big on toffee up front, a nice wallop of sweet bread spice, burnt sugar/dark caramel, buttery oak, browned butter, light smoky notes, raisin-like dark fruit notes and some toast and light herbal/earthy notes to the finish. Medium body with a chewy entry, light, but sharp carbonation and dry, somewhat astringently boozy finish. Really good stuff, a little rough around the edges - somewhat sharp and boozy - but that doesnít really hurt it much, reminds me quite a bit of sweet dark rum.

pours dark copper. Almost no head. aroma is nutty and very sweet. Flavor is sweet. Molasses, bread, nutty, oak. The alcohol is very forward. medium body. slick, sticky mouthfeel. Finishes bitter and the alcohol really shows up at the end. Not that good. I will cellar this for a year and re-rate it.

Golden amber in color with not much in the way of head retention or lacing. Smells of some bread and fruits. Taste is of sweet malts, dark fruits, and biscuits. Coats the palate nicely and is quite enjoyable to drink. I thoroughly enjoyed indulging on this Smuttynose take on an old ale!

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a clear but very dark copper color with very little head. The aroma is boozy, with molasses, oak, brown sugar, walnuts. The flavor is really big and even boozier than the aroma. Figs, some maple, more oak, vanilla, and a little bit of a cough syrup like finish. I donít like this as much as Smuttynose Old Brown Dog Ale.

Bottle to pint glass. This guy pours a really nice looking ruby/brown with a one finger head that leaves almost no trace after a minute or two. The aroma jumps out with brown sugar or toffee. There's a fruitiness underneath too. The taste is dominated by malt sweetness and toffee. There's no hop character here. It's boozy and big. It's got some fruit peeking through as well. There's a slight oak bit in the back. It finishes smooth and creamy. Good stuff.

Strangely pineapply nose. Def a cross between an old ale and a barleywine. Hops submerged, all malt aside from that pineapple aroma.

12 ounce bottle. Tawny light brown color. Small beige head. Buttery toasted malt aroma has notes of almonds and toffee. First sip yields a butterscotch malt flavor with a hint of oakiness. Warming alcohol and dried fruit undertones. there is a smooth silky mouthfeel and nutty malt character. Quite nice indeed!

Brown butter nose, malty, and a deep brown color. Does have the essence of a porter without being too heavy-- perhaps more aged in a barrel.

Leather, alcohol, dried fruit, nuts, and toffee. Tastes quite good. However, itís very very thin, and that almost ruins it. This beer desperately needs some body to it.

Bottle from Brewtopia. Beautiful clear reddish brown with eggshell head and lace. Toasted wooded caramel covered fruity sweet aroma that just borders on cough syrup but thankfully doesnít quite get there. Sweet (!) toasted caramel and ripe fruit with woody herbal lingering bitterness and lingering sweetness. Full body. Slight cloy just short of cough syrupy with unpleasant lingering herbal woody bitterness. Definitely not my kind of beer.
