COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
One of the challenges here at Smuttynose is that we don’t have a pilot system, so we sometimes have to adjust recipes over time. This year’s version really seems to have hit that sweet spot of what we were attempting. Unlike the first vintage, which had a porter/chocolate character, we wanted something between an old ale and a barleywine. To add another element of complexity, we aged this vintage for one month on medium toast oak chips. Enjoy!

Bomber from Hy-Vee Liquor in Quincy, IL (seriously!). Pours a hazy ruby red/deep brown with a soapy, lacy off-white head. Aroma is a nice mix of roasted nuts and toffee, simple and straightforward. The simple nose is misleading, as the flavor has loads of complexity, ranging from strong nuttiness to dry oak to slightly astringent booze, all layered with English hop bitterness. Really impressed by this one!

Taster at the source. Pours medium amber with a beige head. Aroma is caramel, raisin, brown bread. Flavor is brown bread, honey, brown sugar. Finishes with moderate oak tannin. Very well crafted malty ale

Reddish brown. Nose of sweet toasted malt, burnt biscuit, alcohol and oak. Flavor is fruity toasted malt, biscuit, light bitter cocoa, and oak tannins. Light booze. Lightly drying finish from the oak. Very enjoyable.

Pours a brown color with no head. Aroma is lots of oak and some caramel. Flavor is caramel malts and some oak. A little bit sweet, and not at all boozy. Pretty good.

Had on tap at the Grog. $5 for the full pint. Pours a clear light brown, with which an off-tan head half a finger in length stood. A bit metallic. Brown sugar experienced throughout. Tastes of lingering herbal hops, followed by cracked black pepper, and sourdough.
Only half a page of text. Can’t be helped.

Bottle to English pint. Clear brown with huge lite tan head. A: caramel malt, wood, figs. T: loads of caramel malt, toffee, oak. OK, but a touch too sweet.

12 oz. bottle stamped: "Bottled conditioned Feb. 2015, 11.1% abv". Pours a clear, deep copper with a ragged sheet of bubbles on top. Mild nose is spicy dark fruit and vanilla toffee. Big front of vanilla, brown sugar, cherry, dates and whiskey. After a bit it becomes evident there’s enough oak, wheat flour, roasted acorn and dry cocoa flavors on the finish to provide a check on the sweetness. Medium-heavy body has low-medium carbonation and hides the 11.1% fairly well.

Incredible showing. Pulled from winter cellar (I live in house built in 1928, it’s winter in Maine, it’s been the coldest Feb on record, this beer is 50 degrees F). Pours really clear amber in color, minimal head, light nose but as it warms it develops. The flavor also develops intensely. After about 30 minutes the brew is simply amazing. Wow! So complex for a brown, the bottle conditioning shows through and you would think there is wood involved here. Superb beer!

Pours a clear, brownish-red body resembling the color of cherry wood. Little to no head. Almost cloyingly sweet aroma of caramel, malts, and some smokey oak. Flavor is cane sugar combined with some earthy, nutty elements. For some reason, had Dr. Pepper tendencies for me. Dry boozy finish.
