deftim13 (103), California, USA Mar 23, 2008 Bottle 07 Vintage. Poured dark brown with no head. Smell is dark fruit, chocolate, light coffee, yeast, bread and a earthy woody character. Decent taste with a light coffee, fruit, sweet candy sugar, toffee and light hop note. Thin mouthfeel with low carbonation. unfocused and just not put together well. Would not see this aging well.
(notes on this were hard to read. had to guess at a few of the descriptions)
Beer_Hawk (759), Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA Sep 30, 2008 2007 Bottle shared by decaturstevo. Poured brown with an off-white head that left good lace. A little iced tea aroma at first but settles out to milk chocolate, nut, and a slight hop background. The flavor has caramel, brown sugar, and a hint of fruits. Medium body. Enjoyable! carl4beer (284), Fairfax Station, Virginia, USA Sep 5, 2008 22oz. pours a hazy dark copper with small head. aroma is caramel, nuttiness, and a little sweet. mouthful is dried fruit, nut, with some bitterness in the finish. frylock (952), Buffalo, New York, USA Aug 8, 2008 Caramel, toasted malts and a slight smokiness come through in the aroma. Orange-brown color beneath a thin head. Flavor is full of toasty and nutty malts. A light hop presence balances the malts with some cocoa flavors in the finish. Thanks rudy. mabel (1662), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 6, 2008 [1353-20080517] 1pt6floz bottle. Heavy fruity yeast aroma with Belgian yeast malt. Slightly hazy, bright red amber body with a creamy off-white head. Smoky yeast flavour has thick sweet malt. Full body has a smoky grains feel. Interesting big beer.
(Vintage 2007; c/o rudolf, w/ others) iowaherkeye (1410), relocated to Santa Rosa f/Iowa, California, USA Jul 1, 2008 22oz, Bottle Conditioned in 2007 thanks to . . . . puzzl, perhaps? I don’t recall--I think I’ve been holding on to this for around a year. Clear orange brown with a 1 1/2 finger yellow beige head, pretty good retention. Aroma of toasted and caramel malts (low to moderate sweetness), some raisins and tobacco. Flavor was a bit roastier with some added sweet cereal grain notes, and some nuts--pecans? Still plenty raisiny with some light tobacco. Semi-dry roasty finish with bitterness peaking around a 3. No alcohol present, but then again, it’s only 7%. Light to moderate carbonation with a medium body. For whatever reason, I thought Old Ale (love the style) and Smuttynose (great brewery) would have made this beer totally rockin’! It wasn’t, but it was good, so only a slight disappointment.
