In craft beer, there are almost as many bad rye puns as there are bad hop puns; Smuttynose is happy to spare you from more of either. Instead, we’ll tell you about our new Big Beer, Rhye IPA. We brewed it because we like drinking hoppy American-style beers and we wanted a chance to brew with rye. The rest, as they say, is history. The result is a 7% hoppy IPA, with rye spiciness and big hop character. This beer will really get under your armor…
The image on the Rhye IPA label is a famous drawing of an Indian rhinoceros by 16th century German painter and printmaker, Albrecht Dürer. Dürer had never seen the creature before and created the drawing based on one deScription and a crudely scribbled sketch.

DATE: July 6, 2016... OCCASION: Greeting Shan after an attempt to score Hamilton tickets...but she is still in good spirits... GLASSWARE: Barley Creek pint... dark, handsomely gradient amber body with ample bubbles... a frothy, off-white head settles evenly and leaves cloudy ribbons... a fresh, light, toasted bread aroma begins, with the spiciness of rye--pepper, lemon and suntan lotion (?!)--with a heaviness towards the dough... the first sip is invigorating, with a medium-bodied, creamy, thickness that is almost chewable... nutty, toasted, and bready, with a lemony citrus kick... nice peppercorn crackle, with a strong back end finish that lingers.... this beer packs a powerful flavor profile without tipping its hand in terms of ABV... an excellent stand-alone that compliments Smuttynose’s portfolio...

UPDATED: JUN 10, 2016 Bottle, thanks vino! Amber color with nice white head. Aroma is piney, resinous, sticky. Taste is more piney, resinous, sticky, a bit spicy, bittersweet finish. Medium carbonation. Simple, but what it does, it does well - very nice, although I don’t get a lot of rye spiciness in here...

Dark orange pour with a medium off white head. Nice sweet citrus aroma. Citrus flavor up front, resinous hoppy middle, lingering malty, spicy finish. This beer is straight up delicious.

Draft. Nice reddish color. Flavor is slightly syrupy sweet, without much else. Odd under-carbonated mouthfeel. Just kind of meh.

12 ounce bottle. Hazy Amber orange color. Small fluffy beige head with clinging lace. Rich earthy sweet malt aroma. Bittersweet toasted malt flavor has spicy notes. Rye grain, caramel malt, toasted nuts and citrus hops. Spicy, complex and tasty. Quite good.

Turboninja (548) - Tampere, FINLAND - APR 29, 2016
Bottle@home, from Wine Spot, Cleveland, USA. Medium slightly sweet and sour aroma with overaged mango and a hint of vanilla. Darker yellow/orange color with small natural white head and slightly hazy liquid. Medium taste with slightly overaged fruits, sweeter malts and hops. Rye can be tasted easily. Medium/wide taste spectrum and long aftertaste with hops and fruits. Averagely balanced. Medium body with light/medium carbonation. Overall, good quality though unsurprising product. Good implementation of rye.

Another beer from Smuttynose’s arsenal that manages to be a really solid beer that’s readily available and inexpensive. This is a great Rye IPA that combines spicy/earthy rye bite and general IPA hop bitterness, but that manages to be tasty and refreshing, all while costing about $1.50 a bottle. It’s stuff like this that makes Smutty such a great brewery.

Backlog 2015-06-05 Great IPA! I loved this one with a well balance of flavours, bitterness and sweetness.
