Our most award-winning beer, Robust Porter honors the dark, full-bodied ales that were a favorite of dockworkers and warehousemen (hence the name “Porter”) in 19th century London, where the style originated.
It’s a good bet that when Dickens’ Mr. Pickwick sat down for a pint, his beer would have been very similar to our Robust Porter. This smooth, deceptively drinkable beer features an assertive hop profile which accentuates signature flavors of coffee and dark chocolate.

Bottle (12oz). Poured pretty much opaque black with a large foamy-fluffy-creamy medium brown head. Really, really appealing aroma of almost equal parts deep roast coffee/cocoa malt and rich piney hops, with some leafy and yeasty notes as well. Pretty on-style porter taste, creamy bitter and milk chocolate, light coffee bean and nutshell roast malt, quite a bit of lightly acidic resiny hops and some yeast and spice tang as well - and no cola! Mouthfeel is creamy, lightly acidic and carbonated, quite complex and a solid porter body to boot. Really good bitter dark roast porter, on of the best I’ve had - I want more.

Pours black with a thick, creamy, tan head. The aroma is rich chocolate, molases with some dark fruits. The flavor is loaded with molases, chocolates, caramel, plums and coffee. Medium body with light acidity and a bitter finish. World class porter.

Damn this is pretty good...thanks slob. Pours a dark black amber witha pretty huge head. Aroma is monster coffee, chocolate, anise, dry red fruits, and burnt malt. Taste is huge...more like a stout. Fruity malt, alcohol, acidic coffee, bitter chocolate.,,dry hoppy finish. Mouthfeel is really heavy and pretty carbonated. This stuff is great.

(let this one warm up) dark, with medium tan head. aroma is powerfull, a very nicely balanced, floral hops and roasted malts. taste is certainly robust. roasted malts, toffee, mocha, bitter chocolate, and currant berrys. this was really good. packs a punch in the flavor and aroma department. definatly lives up to its name.

12oz. bottle. Nearly opaque ruby-brown with a thin film of dark brown head. Muted roastiness and a sweet chocolate aroma. Faint roast complements bittersweet chocolate flavors. Finish has residual chocolate and some astringent hoppiness. Mouthfeel is light medium, somewhat dry.

(Bottle (brewed 2/06) from <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/massachusetts/w target=blank>Julio’s Liquors) Pours thick and very, very dark brown. About 3 in. of tan head. Aroma actually pretty light: quite a bit of hops, some coffee, tiny bit of chocolate. Some spotty, weepy lacing. Has a rich, thick mouthfeel. Flavor is fairly dominated by the hops, but not the bittering hops, more of the aromatic hops contributing to the taste. This also gives it a grassiness which carries through the finish. Otherwise there is mostly bitter coffee. This seems like a quality beer in every aspect except somehow got overloaded with the wrong kind of hop contributing to an off-flavor.

(03.26.06) Stout/porter sampling with Scott, Tony and Walt at DiCarlo’s, Mundelein, IL. 12 oz brown bottle as gift from Thaichile. 5.7% ABV. Poured black with large long-lasting tan head. No discernable carbonation. Roasted malt in the nose. Medium bodied porter that starts with light malt sweetness and coffee/roasted malt flavors. Finishes dry with light roasted malt and bitterness fade. Flavorful and well-balanced, this is a very enjoyable porter that wins best of show in our six porter/stout sampling. Thanks Thaichile!

12oz bottle. This one is smokey, nutty, and bitter. The tan head is clinging to the sides of the pint glass till the end. The finish is dry and nutty. This my favorite New England brewery... I should check out the brewery sometime.
