Wow is this beer black! Smokey vanilla nose with hints of gourmet coffee and chocolate drink powder. Bitter chocolate at first sip, incredible body carries waves of flavor. As it dries at the end a wonderful hoppy flavor, an almost IPA like grapefruitty hoppiness, comes through. Awesome porter with one of the sharpest labels I've seen in a long time.

3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
This brew pours a small head of large brown bubbles and an opaque black body. It has a mild malt coffee aroma. Initially it is smooth and mild but comes through in the end with a tingly coffee flavored mouthfeel.

Nice thick dark brown liquid that is opaque. Good rich roasted aroma with hints of happiness. Rich coffee taste with nice bitters and smooth full mouthfeel. Lovely finish. A wonderful beer.

This stuff is primo, absolutley great. Thick heady aroma of chocolate, coffee and blackberries. Liqueur coffee taste comes in thick and strong surrounded by more roasty flavours, magnificently balanced bitterness and a superb body for something of such modest abv.

Good pour, comes out thick like used motor oil. Looks similar too, until hit by light and then you can see reddish/copper hues. Smells of chocolate, coffee, slight hops and faint sweet spices tickle the inside of my nose. The creamy bone white head is appealing, though it dissipates rather quickly. First sip is a pointed attack of the hops on the tip of my tongue. I can then feel the limited bubbles wash over and off of my tongue and leave behind chocolate, toffee and coffee flavors. The aftertaste is dominated by espresso and chocolate, however smoky oak and toasted coconut make their presence known. The aftertaste lingers on until you lift your glass again, seemingly no matter how long you take; this is pleasurable. All in all, the Smuttynose is one of my favourite porters. I will definitely purchase it again.

(12 oz. bottle) Hmm. Liked this better last time, perhaps I'm spoiled. Or perhaps it's too late in the night for coffee. No matter, this is not a bad beer. Dark and rather biting with a definitely respectable toffee-colored head. Leaves your mouth feeling like the better end of a chocolate mocha.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Significantly bitter, such that you recoil from it initially thinking you're drinking a mislabeled stout/IPA. Then you just realize that Smuttynose has burned you again. Although there are some burnt herbal notes, it's all hidden behind the overwhelming hops that play first-team to the malt's JV squad.

This beer rocks!
Pours very dark and thick. Small, creamy, well-tanned head. Not completely diminishing. Decent lacing. Only when held up to very brightl light can one see the lovely, clear ruby hue.
The nose is full of milk chocolate and coffee, vanilla, toasted cashews and allspice. Burnt flowers as well. Very nice!
The flavor is of espresso and bittersweet dark chocolate up front. Moderately bitter on the backside with hints of buttermilk and warm alcohol.
Full-bodied with a silky mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Medium-length, dry, bitter finish with a hint of capuccino and freshly mown grass at the conclusion. A very hearty, well-hopped porter! World Class!

Aroma is roasty liquorice, alcohol. Like a tropical stout, but a bit dryer. Colour's alright ... great mouthfeel, wafts about the nose. Very sweet. I have an old bottle (December) but still quite good. Reminds me very much of a tropical stout.
