Bottle - thanks, J! Pours nearly black with dark tan head. Aroma dominated by sweet milky chocolate; some sugar, just a hint of coffee. Taste is much drier than nose - lightly sweet, roasted coffee bitterness that lingers nicely. Palate: medium body, average carbonation, just a shade thin. Overall: really nice porter.

I’m not too crazy about the bottle, but this one presents a great chocolate coffee aroma that surrounds your nose. It exhibits a pretty nice head and is great in cooler weather. I’m impressed with all of Smuttynose’s more roasted beers. This one fits in perfectly with the likes of Old Brown Dog and Really Old Brown Dog but takes it to the next level.

pours dark black with a small tan head. This porter has a very malty coffee flavor. It is lightly sweet and lightly bitter. There is an unsweetened chocolate flavor with a strong dark fruit taste and a light roasted flavor.

FROM NOTES: July 2, ’12
Served on tap at the Smuttynose Brewery into a pint glass.
A: Very roasty. The roasted malts take on a dark chocolate and coffee character.
A: Pours a very dark, almost black, color with a thick, brown head that stays throughout the beer and exceptional head retention. A great looking beer.
T: Follows the nose with a very roasted flavor, but also a nice bitter hop bite. This beer is appropriately named --ery robust.
P: Medium body and medium carbonation.
O: Among the best porters I’ve tasted.

Once I realized there was a NH brewed shelf beer in the top 10 porter category I had to have it. Thanks Nick for snagging it out of a mix 12pk for me. Very dark brown black with a awesome mocha head that stays as a film. Smell is roast malt, espresso, slight cocoa. Taste is robust! Strong roast, black coffee, and a hint of dark chocolate. Some traces of hop bitterness. Tasty beer that I have shrugged off in the past.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
This is a fine porter, and the name suits it. It pours a rich, viscous brown with a medium head that leaves a ton of lace. The aroma is smokey malt, with black walnut notes and a little bit of vanilla. The flavor adds a bit of baker’s chocolate and a mild tingle in the finish. Delicious.
