pumpkinheart (63), Aurora, Illinois, USA May 28, 2008 Bottle into English pint glass. Pours a medium bodied deep, opaque brown. The head was actually a duo-color tan and chocolate, and it dissipated down to a thin layer that carried through the entire drink. Aroma is even caramel, chocolate, rich roast coffee. Frankly, I’m not a big fan of coffee notes in porters, but this one is balanced as nicely as any I’ve tried with that characteristic. The flavor is an initial dark choco, almost sweet, with the coffee bringing up the rear, hangin out on the mouth. The palate is mid-level heavy, which isn’t surprising. There’s also a smokey hazelnut coffee sort of oliy clinging that isn’t quite as pleasant. In the end, this is a very drinkable porter. Nothing extreme, nothing paint-by-numbers blah. Nicely done.
DrBayern (1000), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Oct 27, 2008 12 oz. bottle on 10/24/208. Deep clear mahogany body, long lasting rocky tan head, and rings of lace with each swallow. Coffee, unsweetened chocolate, hints of licorice, and a little spruce. Dark molasses brings brings a fleeting sweetness, but the bitterness contributed by dark roasted malts and piney hops are the mainstays of the flavor. medium to full body, light carbonation, noticeable astringency, and a very long, pleasingly bitter finish. This could easily be mistaken for a stout. Very good, one of the best porters I’ve had in a long time. mwelsh13 (225), Maryland, USA Oct 26, 2008 12 oz bottle pours black with a great tan head. Lots of coffee, burnt sugar, caramel, and chocolate in the aroma. Coffee, roast malt, toast, slightly bitter chocolate with a great mouthfeel. Slightly thick with a great finish. Beardface (238), Eugene, Oregon, USA Oct 26, 2008 Six pack from Gary’s in Madison, NJ. Very smooth and (obviously) robust porter that pours a pretty dark brown with a mild tan head. Has a bit of a sweet tinge to the flavor but has a wonderful bitter snap at the back end. Highly enjoyable porter. 00cobraR (998), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA Oct 26, 2008 a damn fine porter. pours a dark brown color with a nice thick brown head. aroma was sweet and full of roasted malt. flavor was creamy and sweet. had a slightly hoppy coffee finish. over all a fantastic brew. Sanchex (222), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 25, 2008 Sweet chocolate roastiness in the nose. Opaque black with a ruby glow around the edges of the glass. Rich creamy mouthfeel with a mineral bitterness on the finish. Notes of milk chocolate, caramel, and hint coffee. Cheers!
