A hearty ebony colored ale that starts with a rich malty palate finished with clean hops and notes of coffee and chocolate.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown, with a strong tan head. Malty, nutty aroma. Coffee, nuts, and a bit of chocolate are the main notes in the malty flavor profile - not much in the way of hops. A bit of a soapy aftertaste. Mouthfeel is a bit thin. A decent enough porter, but not really deserving of its high rating, in my opinion.

An excellent porter! Dark brown to almost black with tan head of fine bubbles. The lacing continues down the glass very thin but is there all the way to the end---even when interrupted drinking takes 25 minutes or more! The aromas seemed a little weak for such a flavorful beer. Some smell of smoke and coffee malt; tastes of coffee and very slight bitter chocolate, some soy. Well done porter that is so easy to drink and maintains good flavor even as it warms to room temp. Has a slight bitter finish, not too dry a little more fig or raisin would have been perfect but still is an excellent brew!

Bottle. Pours an almost-opaque brown-black with very faint garnet highlights. Head is brown, large-grained, and lacy; it has good duration. Nose is smoked latte, baking chocolate, and figs. Intensely roasty on the front of the tongue, with coffee, soy, savory, rosemary, unsweetened chocolate, and dried plum notes; the weight is correct for the style. This isn’t an imperial porter, it’s just an excellent regular porter. Finish is long, smoky, dry, and bitter. Very well made.

12oz bottle, from Mondial de la Bière, Mulhouse shop. Gorgeously velvet, deep brown pour with creamy thick tan head. Nose radiates freshness all over: blackened malts, freshly ground arabica beans, vanilla and red berry, given an extra peppery zing by garden herbs. Taste caters with an extraordinary subtlety and balance to the full spectrum of dry & roasted: more dark chocolate, given a luxurious edge countered by citrussy hops, freshly brewed coffee with an infusion of bayleaf and black pepper corn. Astringent, perfectly dry palate with medium mouthfeel. Lingering finish summmoning all aromas and tastes for a final victory lap on the smacking lips. A fine blackened specimen of oxymorontic NH Yankee subtlety and balance, covering more iconic bases of US brewing than many an amped & barreled ImpStout, and at half the abv ransom.

Alengrin (1716) - BELGIUM - SEP 5, 2014
Typical ’robust porter’ made from five malt types and Cascade hops. Light beige head, dark chocolate brown colour bordering on black. Aroma of black coffee, raisins, dried plums, toffee, black pepper... Full malty taste, thick with a ’dark fruitiness’ and coffee- and chocolate-like dark maltiness, long hop bitter finish, very dry, tonic water-like, very satisfying.

Pours dark mahogany brown with a large brown head. Smells chocolatey. Taste is chocolate and roast. Medium-bodied with a smooth texture and soft mouth-carbonation, Smuttynose Robust Porter finishes with a subtle lingering roast bitterness.

dambor (36) - Berlin, GERMANY - AUG 29, 2014
Pours black with a small head leaving some lacing. Aroma: dark malts, chocolate and some lactose aromas typical for milk stouts. Taste: chocolate, roasted malts, well balanced. A solid porter, however, nothing too spectacular.

355 ml bottle. Pours a reddish black with a resilient white head. Aroma is fruity, chocolatey, ashy and tobacco-y. Flavor is dark berries, coffee and chocolatey notes. Very dry. A surprising level of tartness, with the obvious coffee bitterness. Some menthol. Lingering tobacco flavor. Medium body, strong carbonation. Good porter!

Good assertive hops in the profile, that plays well with the roasted malts. It’s one of my favorite beers from Smuttynose. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
