BeMerry (37), Fairfax, Virginia, USA Feb 3, 2008 22 oz bottle. Amber/dark orange with bubbly head. Aroma musty, blue cheese, wet fur. Flavor semi-sweet, metallic, tar, brown sugar, molasses, caramel. Smokey peat in brewer’s description is quite noticeable. Finishes slightly sour. Mouth feel is liqueur-like. adrian910ss (1395), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 30, 2008 22 oz bomber. Pours a dark muddy amber caramel with a medium bubble laced beige head. Aroma of malt, burnt sugar, beef jerky and smoke. Taste of beef jerky, malt and liquid smoke. A bit of a letdown from Smuttynose. MrBendo (1039), Swedesboro, New Jersey, USA Jan 26, 2008 Updated: Jan 30, 2008Bomber. Clear orange/copper color with a medium head. Aroma practically screams PEAT; big, smoky peat with bready malts and earth. Dry and smoky taste. Incredibly dry compared to most other Scotch’s. pantanap (1323), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 26, 2008 bottle thanks to andrew.....pours a semi-transparent amber brown with a frothy white head....nose was made up of malts and dark fruit. no peaty smoke for me as far as the nose is concerned....flavor consisted of a lot of sweet malt with some hoppy bitterness/spiciness in the finish. the sweetness takes over the bitterness as the beer warms and some smoke comes into play a little bit more. tunneler (112), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Jan 24, 2008 was fairly unimpressed here, i didn’t get much of the peat smoke some people have noticed. A bit too sweet and generally ho-hum. perhaps a bad bottle?
k4df4l (154), DTown, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 24, 2008 22 oz bottle - pours a ruddy amber light bubbly foam. Aroma of wet leather and peat smoke. Flavor initially hints at sweet malt with a wisp of caramel/toffee that gets steamrolled by the peat smoke, peat and more peat. As the beer warms, some of the peat smoke subsides but still remains a dominant flavor. Mouthfeel is spot on, medium/medium heavy palate. beachbum25 (778), Powellville, Maryland, USA Jan 18, 2008 22 oz Bomber-pours a clear amber color w/a slight tan head. Sweet Malt aroma. Easy drinking brew, Flavors of roasted malt, toffee, brown sugar, & just a touch of spice. Earthy, woodsy flavor w/a touch of peat & carbonation. This was pretty good stuff. nhorween (639), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 16, 2008 Bottle. The label on mine is different than the picture, just says "Scotch Ale." 2007 bottle, I assume that’s why. Reddish brown pour with a thin white head. Malty aroma - toffee, brown sugar, alcohol, musty, and hugely woody. Super woody in the flavor. Good body, but I can’t taste much other than the peat and smokiness. Unbalanced. I’d give this another chance though.
