Bottle. Heavy malt aromas of bread and caramel, light to moderate hop notes of herbs and cooked orange, dough for the yeast, with hints of date, toffee, scotch whiskey and faint soured milk. Head is average size, frothy, lightl tan with good lacing and is mostly lasting. Color is slightly hazy yet sparkling copper. Flavor starts lightly sweet, moderately acidic and acetic, then finishes lightly sweet and aicidc and moderately bitter. Palate is medium, oily with a fizzy carbonation and a chewy finish. Bitter than most Scotch Ales I’ve had, but it is deep, rich and oh so tasty.

The aroma is weak for the style without sweet malt it’s dry and peaty with a scorched earth quality. The appearance is amber with a medium head. The taste is like the aroma. The palate is smooth. Overall a real disappointment from this brewer.

Kinda of dry, but plenty of flavor with act of slight nuttiness flavor, it's strong but not overpowering. Slight astringent at the end. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aromas of cherries and toffee. Hazy amber, with off-white head, great retention. Tastes are savory, with soy flavors, dry caramelized malts, and earthy, bitter hops. Medium-full body, sticky, creamy, full carbonation, and finishes with rich nutty flavors.

jbruner (1129) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - JAN 10, 2013
Pours a deep, slightly hazy copper-brown from the bottle with dissipating off-white head and little to no lacing. Aroma of whiskey and barley, taste follows with a slightly bitter finish and light burn on the way down. Decent, but there are better scotch ales out there.

22oz bottle in a thistle. Pours ruby/brown with a lacy, off-white head. Aroma of caramel malts, some toffee and bread, a little spice, and bitter/floral hops. Flavor about the same. Average to smooth texture. A pretty good Scotch ale.

sfontain (673) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - JAN 4, 2013
22 oz bottle, Andersons, Columbus. Deep barely-hazy brown pour; light tan head; no significant lacing. Aroma is mostly sweet and malty with a few other scents in the background; caramel, dark fruit, nuts; slightly astringent and sour. Flavor sweet, malty, caramel, bread; lightly bitter finish. Medium body; coarsely carbonated; lightly sticky. Reminds me of my second batch of homebrew, which I didn’t particularly love. This is somewhat unique but entirely lackluster.

Darwenus (386) - Virginia, USA - JAN 4, 2013
A nice copper color with a medium head that leaves a little lacing. The aroma has tones of caramel and citrus, and the flavor is sweet. Not nearly as strong as other Scotch ales I’ve had, and with virtually nothing on the exhale. Not bad, but I expected more from a brew that’s touted as part of the Smuttynose Big Beer series.

Dogbrick (6065) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - DEC 30, 2012
This brew is a clear pale mahogany color with a medium creamy light beige head that diminishes slowly. Strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of malt, caramel and smoke. Medium body with flavors of peaty malt, caramel and slight hops. The candy sugar element is very subtle. Finishes slightly smoky with a malt aftertaste. Decent overall.

Brown pour. Rich bready sweet malts, caramels, nuts, light earthy smoke. Flavor is breads, caramels, metallic smoke. Medium sweet. Medium bitterness. Medium dry finish. Not my favorite scotch ale - not horrible.
