Nice dark brown/orange, small white head. Nice smoky, malt fruity aroma - right on style but mild. Strong alcohol taste, lots of sweetness (caramel), but really any of the fruit the aroma suggests. Overall, a really nice Scotch Ale - rarely do beers actually nail this style, but I thought this one did an excellent job. blankboy (3201), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Pours a cloudy dark reddish-brown with a spare off-white head. Sweet aroma of caramel malt and a scotch-like smokey scent. Flavour of caramel malt, smoke, hops and alcohol. Medium bodied. Pretty good. HogTownHarry (3993), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 24, 2006 Bottle (650ml). Shared with blankboy, GregClow, jerc and tupalev - my bottle. Poured cloudy deep mahogany with a smallish off-white head - for some reason it looked pretty good to me. As it was a little too cold, it was initially very mild - mulchy sweet yeasty roasty malt, musty and a touch sour with UK hops. Taste was very grainy (I got oats, among other things) with light caramel/brown sugar roast malt, quite sweet and oaty, with some hop and alcohol bitterness on warming. Thickish mouthfeel, syrupy and alcoholic - a decent malty scotch ale - a bit boozy and fairly sweet, but that sounds about right to me. jerc (3888), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Sweet malty flavour has similar mild earthy notes. Quite drinkable but fails to be impressive. Medium palate. 2beerguys (299), North Shore, Massachusetts, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Feb 17, 2006 This Scoth Ale was tested out of Smuttynose’s "Big Beer" bottle. It pours a medium brown color with a large light brown head. Good residue on the glass. Body is cloudy and muddy. There was a significant amount of sediment in this bottle. Not an overpowering scent by any means, it smells of light flowery hops. Initial taste is both lightly sweet and bitter, finishing lightly bitter. Palate is left feeling creamy with light to medium body. Finishes smooth. bigrond (1044), factoryville, Pennsylvania, USA

Strong butterscotch aroma with notes of oranges. Sweet spicey malt in mouth with light lactic notes and nutty finish. Rich and oily texture. Slightly dissappointed. Tasted 28/01/05 at Institut Scotch Ale tasting. Bought at Galeville’s Grocers, in late 2004. guzzler67 (1277), Hanover, Maryland, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 11, 2005 Dark ruby appearance with a small head that disappeared fast and left little lacing. Earthy, slightly smoky aroma dominated by caramel malts, molassas and dark fruit. Taste paired up fruit (cherry) and chocolate with an underlying earthiness. Smooth finish masked the alcohol well. On tap at Mahaffeys in Baltimore.
