| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Nov 11, 2005 [22 oz. bottle] Pours a dark brown color with a small head that leaves very little lacing. Tastes quite sweet at first, then a huge burst of fine malts makes its way through. Finally, mild hops enter and alcohol finishes. This is a fine brew from the folks at Smuttynose. lamas (715), Adams Morgan, Washington DC, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Nov 5, 2005 22 oz. bottle. A hazy mahogany pour with a smallish khaki head. Caramel and cocoa are present in the malty aroma along with some buttery pecans. Smooth, creamy and medium-bodied. A good bit of butterscotch, caramel and vanilla in the taste and even some hints of melon. Alcohol is also present. A solid Scotch ale. 11026 (1799), Alabama, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 1, 2005 Bottle from Springslicker. Pours a nice deep brown color with a decent reddish background. Head is a yellowish-tan color and fairly reticent to form. No real lacing to speak of. Rich and malty aroma. Perhaps a bit figgy. Medium to full bodied, smooth with a lower carbonation level. Malt seems to dominate flavor, slight alcohol bite in the middle, slight but noticeable hop balance towards the finish. Decent. SpringsLicker (2042), Tennessee, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Oct 7, 2005 This starts out with a large creamy head and a clear brown body with nice red highlights.
Caramel and apples in the aroma.
The flavor is malty and sweet, but lacks any smoky, vanilla, or buttery tones that would improve it’s depth and complexity. Simple, straitforward Scotch Ale. pineypower (1090), Pine Barrens, New Jersey, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Sep 20, 2005 200th rating.....Poured out a nice deep brownish color with a nice foamy head. The aroma was very nice and enticing. The taste was smooth, little less alcohol than I’d expect, none the less a very drinkable beer, with some nice notes of toffee, malt and some earthy flavors you’d expect to find in a cigar. Very good with one I might add StewardofGondor (1934), Washington Heights - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 29, 2005 Nice deep and translucent copper in color with saffire accents at the bends. Foamy, dense tan head that leaves brilliant tan lacing as we go. Malty, biscuit whiff along with aroma accents of caramel, unsalted pecans, butterscotch, toffee and peat. Malt reigns supreme as it graces the palate. Big flavor paddle presses down on the tongue, extracting an elemental force of caramelized pecans, scotch on the rocks, tree bark and butterscotch. Background flavors include brown sugar, bourbon and soda syrup, light molasses and some maple fudge to serve as a sweetening element. A little thin yet syrupy and retentive on the outset. Malt-favored balance and muted carbonation, finishing as single malt scotch. Flavor seems to come and go, kind of like my level of enjoyment, yet still with a pleasant outcome. Thanks for the bottle, tpkenned! HumuloneRed (750), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 5, 2005 Murky red color with a thin head and some lacing. Raisin, malt, and earth in the nose. Malt, roast, bread dough, and caramel in the nose. It has a complex smokiness that is hard to pin point and a earth hop bite to balance. Nice beer. Thanks Fly!
