Very well made beer in a simple style that often goes overboard one way or another in malt or hops. These guys did it right. Delicious. MrRomero (1934), Nolanville, Texas, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 15, 2005 22oz bottle: pours caramel brown with a thin beige head. Big malty aroma, light peat and just a smidge of smoke. Big maltty flavor as well which makes it sweet. Lightly hopped. Light fruitiness in the finish. Medium body. A nice beer. Aroma has some vague peatiness but no smoke, some caramel. Taste is smooth, no alcohol warmth, no peat, some developing fruitiness and a slight smokiness towards the finish. Some nuttiness detected. A rather average beer. KariCupcake (214), Lenox, Massachusetts, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | May 29, 2005 Big bottle. Smells nice. Very very smooth and tastes like thistles (didn’t see the label on the bottle until after I tasted it) with an undercurrent of apples. No aftertaste at all. I love it! | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 22, 2005 (22oz bottle) Pours a large, biege foamy head with a deep nutty brown colour. Nose is VERY roasted and not as peat as expected. Flavour is mildly scotch upfront but a very pleasant and full roasted malt backing. I very much like this beer - though much of the characteristics match that of a Nut Brown than that of a Scotch Ale. Puchased at Bessette’s in Canton, NY. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 16, 2005 22 oz bottle. I love all of Smuttys big bottles and this is no different. As good of a Scotch Ale that I’ve had. This has a nice peat taste along with a sticky hop and maltiness. Smokey and rich, the carbonation just dances on your tongue. Mangino (1027), Mississippi, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 30, 2005 Pours a dark amber. Small white head. Aroma is caramel malts and a bourbon twang. Flavor is very malty, a little hop kick to it.
