DrDavid (957), Johnson, Vermont, USA Jan 6, 2009 Bottle. Earthy malt aroma, touch of sweetness. Deep reddish brown body, small off-white head. Flavor has sweetness and lots of malt. Very pleasant, but I agree with others that the sweetness may be a bit overdone. ksurkin (354), Norfolk, Virginia, USA Dec 31, 2008 bomber from grape and gourmet. pours a very dark amber with a slight red tint and a half inch light brown head and good lacing. aroma is a bit faint with hints of roasted nuts, caramel, a touch of citrus, and a bit of smoke. flavor is very smooth but not very bold. the smoke flavor comes through after the swallow and follows flavors of roasted pine nute, caramel, some hop bitterness, and a touch of coffee. mouthfeel is a bit heavy, but easily drinkable. overall, not a bad scotch ale. dkachur (2316), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Dec 30, 2008 22 ounce bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a
brownish tinted red with a three finger head. Average head
retention and lacing. Nutty aroma with some coffee notes. Taste
is very similar with green apple and slight alcohol. Medium
bodied. mike mcneil (660), St Augustine, Florida, USA Dec 27, 2008 22 oz. bomber. Pour shows a dark amber-brown, slightly hazy color. Creates a solid and thick 1" bone white head with excellent retention throughout the entire glass. Nose reveals a pleasant array of aromas of peat smoke, burnt caramel, figs, raisins and toasted malts. Mouthfeel was disappointingly a bit too thin and watery in the finish for such a big beer. Flavor department shows a classic Wee Heavy Ale with an ample amount of peat smoked malts, caramels, toffee and dark fruits. Finish is bittersweet with a touch of spice hoppiness coming through to balance the sweetness. Not a top-shelf Scotch Ale but worth the try. hophead75 (1945), Boonton, New Jersey, USA Nov 1, 2008 bomber. Deep amber in color with a medium sized off whtie head. Aroma of caramel/molasses, peat smoke, light roast. Taste is very clean, with a good amount of caramel, moderate peat smoke, some roast, and mild to moderately fruity. Full bodied, in line with the 7.8 % ABV. Finishes with lingering light notes of fruit and molasses. Very nice scotch ale. surffisher (194), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Oct 26, 2008 22 oz. bomber bottle. Pours clear copper, with a small, but steady light tan head that leaves some soapy lace. Aroma is very peaty and smoky with nice carmelized malt and some light fruity esters. Flavor is peaty and rather dry and scotch-like, with a fairly bitter finish. Medium bodied, but seems just a bit thin and watery. Fairly smooth, with some nice warming alcohol. Solid effort overall. Wasatch (270), Layton, Utah, USA Oct 25, 2008 22oz. Bomber
2005 Vintage
Poured into a chalice a dark brown color, nice carbonation, nice small creamy tan head, some nice sticky lacing follows. The nose is malty, slightly spicy, slightly dark fruits (figs, raisins, prunes), and some caramel. The taste is malty, and some good tones of dark fruit and spice, and caramel. The taste is also slightly sweet, nice warming efffect going down. Medium body. Very drinkable, another awesome brew from Smuttynose, getting close to having quite a few offerings from them. Highly recommended.
ajm (902), Los Angeles, California, USA Oct 16, 2008 Bottle from Charles Street. A very even nose and flavor - char, roast, caramel, malt and very, very light chocolate. Creamy texture and nice, smooth finish. One of the best Scotch Ales I’ve sampled.
