22oz Bottle, purchased at Provisions - Northampton, MA. Vaporizing toasted bread aroma, with some herbal oak-y qualitites. The maltiness in this beer is very nice. Toasty and bright, kind of like a stout without the roasted barley. There’s a polished calvados-like edge to the finishing warmth that adds an air of refinement. The downer for me is that harsh ashy edge that the peated malt gives the whole overall profile. That malt doesn’t belong in any beer, in my opinion, and reminds me of old cigar ash, leaving an acerbic, dry bite on the tongue. And the biggest bummer is that you wouldn’t think, hey Smoked beer, you just get this grimy, industrial smear on the roof of your mouth, which isn’t exactly pleasant. This is a somewhat sad experience, because I’ve been waiting so long to have this beer and think so highly of Smuttynose that this was quite a downer.

Bomber. Nose of deep dark caramel and chocolate, rich malt, roast, hint of peaten smoke. Deep red pour with a jiggling light tan head. Taste is sweet with medium bitterness and good balance, a lightly scratching floral character, wood and light cherry. Rich malt depth with a dominant peat smoke finish and aftertaste, lovely campfire remnants. Smooth, velveteen feel on the full body, but not fat or flabby. It’s good but not great.

Pours a dark amber hue with nice white-ish head that leaves a good amount of lacing. Aromas are caramel, roast, light peat, bubblegum and bread. Flavors are bread and caramel, then some sugary sweetness and finally a dose of roast. Palate is a little lacking as this feels somewhat lighter than a lot of Scotch ales I have had. Overall, this is a little disappointing. The flavors are very muted and are very short-lived; also there isn’t the usual alcohol overtones that I enjoy in a good Scotch. Just a little above average in my book.

Sampled at DLD 2013. It poured a hazy amber color with a beige head. The aroma was of vanilla, lavendar, spice, hops, grapes and hints of chocolate. The taste was similar with a full body, warm, smooth mouthfeel. It hid the alcohol very well. Tasty.

FROTHINGSLOSH (3989) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 2, 2013
Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark nut brown color with a medium sized foamy tan head that lingered and left a bit of lacing. The aroma was woody, ashy and had a bit of maple. The flavor was sweet pineapple, coconut, wood, a hint of smoke and moderate maple. Medium length pineapple, wood and maple finish. Medium body. Nice and much better then I expected.

From a 22 oz bottle shared in Avon NC. Cloudy amber pour with a fine off white head. Sweet aroma with notes of dark cherry. Lively mouthfeel with lots of carbonation and an underlying bitterness. Flavors of caramel and tart cherries. Tart, crisp finish.

On tap at Global brew. Pours a clear amber with an off white head that is thin, but small bead and stays. Has a floral grassy aroma. Taste is sweet caramel malt with a bit of sourness, doubtless from the yeast strain, and a butteriness. Finishes with characteristic mild hop bitterness. Pretty darn good!

Draft. Deep brown color. Candy sugar and bready taste. Not as boozy. Kind of easy drinking for the style. Not bad ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

(Bottle). Pours a reddish brown complexion with persistent tan head. Aroma is a mild musk and alcohol. The flavor is traditional with slightly sour taste. Although this is one of my least favorite styles, I'm always happy to try a new Smuttynose. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Nice scotch ale with taste of caramel, malt and dried fruits. Mouthfeel is a litlte thiner than I expected. Nice smokeyness to it. Very carbonated color is almost of a cola color.
