4.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 amp811 (38) - Charleston, South Carolina, USA - MAR 17, 2009
UPDATED: JUL 15, 2009 Very malty with little hops bitterness to counterbalance it, which I love. The malt combined with the candy sugar give it a pleasant, sweet taste. If you’re not careful, you’ll finish this one quickly.
Note: I’m a little biased when it comes to a Scotch Ales, especially a good one like this.

Dark brown, clear, with a light brown head. Sweet nose with licorice, coffee, chocolate. Exquisite flavor--sweet and rosy, with some light chocolate notes and fruity hints of cherries and strawberries.

On tap - Super mega dark coppery color that was only somewhat normal copperyness around the edges. I couldn't discern a perceptable aroma (i have a slight cold). Slight fizzy mouthfeel with a blissfully wonderful malty taste. Simply amazing stuff. Sadly, my girlfriend liked it a lot too...meaning she gave me the beer she was drinking and she got the rest of mine. )=

This is an extremely tasty ale and another winner from Smuttynose. Fresh malt aroma and deep garnet color. Nice roasted malt flavor with underlying taste of chocolate and cherries. Nicely balanced with hop presence, this is an exceptional Scotch ale. Many thanks to Goz for this tasty treat.

Big bottle. Smells nice. Very very smooth and tastes like thistles (didn’t see the label on the bottle until after I tasted it) with an undercurrent of apples. No aftertaste at all. I love it!

22oz bomber from Hannaford. Pours a dark copper hazy body with a good inch of khaki colored head. Smells smoky/peaty with hints of chocolate. Chocolate, coffee, burnt malt, peat/smoke, caramel... Rich full body with just enough carbonation. A bit of a sipper, but one sip definitely invites another. I wish my review were more glowing, but this honestly is the best wee-heavy I’ve ever had, and another slam-dunk for Smuttynose!

22oz Bottle Conditioned in 2007, thanks to notalush for the bottle. Clear reddish brown with a one finger creamy beige head, fair retention. Plenty of sweet caramel and toffee sits atop some lightly smoky peated malt--mmmm. There are also light hints of dry wood. Flavor delivered what the aroma promised with plenty of smoke and peated malt to make me happy, and enough dry woody notes to keep the caramel and toffee from getting cloying--I was just a tad nervous that they’d used candy sugar, but you wouldn’t be able to tell. There was also a salty tobacco note. Dry finish with bitterness peaking around a 2-3. The alcohol was nicely warming, but not hot or boozy. Smooth medium body with moderate carbonation. Not much makes me happier than a good Scotch ale, and this is no exception.

This beer rocks!...Crystal clear, copper ale with a mid-sized, frothy, white head. Good retention. The nose is very malty with notes of toffee, caramel, bisquit, cola, light molasses and pear. Well-balanced flavor with light molasses, floral hops and a touch of salt. Full-bodied with a silky mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Lengthy, astringent, dry finish. World class beer!

Bomber from dirtymike. Pours coppery nut brown to a clean mahogany with a small bubbly tan head that gathers up around the glass edge to then give a nice film of lacing as you enjoy the brew. Aroma is complex caramel malts with creamy oats and sweet mild chocolate notes. The initial draw is sweet caramel malt and then you notice the sublte alcohol coming through with a fizziness to it and then a creamy roasted malt tingles your mouth while you wait for the next draw. The palate is warm and medium to full-bodied and fizzy, and leaves your mouth watering while waiting for the next draw. A most inviting and drinkable brew.
