SQNfan (499), Wheaton, Illinois, USA May 1, 2008 This poured dark caramel in color with an off-white head of medium-bubbles. The nose was sweet and candied with aromas of bubble gum, sweet caramel and a smokiness in the back. In the mouth it was medium-bodied with a sweeness in the mid-palate before finishing dry.
hophead75 (1723), Boonton, New Jersey, USA Nov 1, 2008 bomber. Deep amber in color with a medium sized off whtie head. Aroma of caramel/molasses, peat smoke, light roast. Taste is very clean, with a good amount of caramel, moderate peat smoke, some roast, and mild to moderately fruity. Full bodied, in line with the 7.8 % ABV. Finishes with lingering light notes of fruit and molasses. Very nice scotch ale. surffisher (147), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Oct 26, 2008 22 oz. bomber bottle. Pours clear copper, with a small, but steady light tan head that leaves some soapy lace. Aroma is very peaty and smoky with nice carmelized malt and some light fruity esters. Flavor is peaty and rather dry and scotch-like, with a fairly bitter finish. Medium bodied, but seems just a bit thin and watery. Fairly smooth, with some nice warming alcohol. Solid effort overall. 2005 Vintage
Poured into a chalice a dark brown color, nice carbonation, nice small creamy tan head, some nice sticky lacing follows. The nose is malty, slightly spicy, slightly dark fruits (figs, raisins, prunes), and some caramel. The taste is malty, and some good tones of dark fruit and spice, and caramel. The taste is also slightly sweet, nice warming efffect going down. Medium body. Very drinkable, another awesome brew from Smuttynose, getting close to having quite a few offerings from them. Highly recommended.
ajm (438), Los Angeles, California, USA Oct 16, 2008 Bottle from Charles Street. A very even nose and flavor - char, roast, caramel, malt and very, very light chocolate. Creamy texture and nice, smooth finish. One of the best Scotch Ales I’ve sampled. basewars (53), New York, USA Sep 1, 2008 2007 from Westmere Beverage. Pour dark brown with some sediment. 2-3 fingers of head. Aroma is caramel, hops, and what I assume is peat because it’s a common aroma to other Scottish ales I’ve tried. Flavor is sweet but with a alcohol bite that mellows as you drink. Not much of a finish. Mouthfeel is creamy. Good beer overall.
