3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
I poured a 12oz bottle into a mug. It came as part of a mix pack for $15.99 ($1.33 per bottle or $0.11 per ounce).
Appearance: Surprisingly dark brown with a honey glow. Hazy with carbonation initially present. Pours to a small, white, foamy head which retains and laces well.
Smell: Slightly fruity scent, but distinctly malty. A hint of hops.
Taste: Not too many American breweries do an English-style pale ale, and those that do donít tend to do them too well. While Smuttynose Shoals Pale Ale may not be an exact authentic replica of a British brew, itís most definitely not American, either. The malts are actually the star of the show, here, though thereís still plenty of hop character you expect in a pale ale.
Up front I notice a sweet malt flavor with notes of toast, muffins and orange marmalade. The hops are present as well, but donít reveal themselves until the finish. The beer has a consistent slightly dry bitterness throughout, which really complements the darker malt flavor. Perhaps a hint of citrus from the hops can be detected, which is nice. A mild bitter bite as it goes down keeps the palette well-balanced and interesting. Itís not Fullerís, but itíll do.
Drinkability: The pale ale is supposed to be overtly drinkable, especially compared to the IPA, and Smuttynose Shoals Pale Ale definitely succeeds in this aspect. The mouthfeel is perfectly medium all around. Robust enough flavor to keep it interesting, but still crisp and smooth to make it easy to quaff down. This beer weighs in at 5.6% ABV, which seems just about right (maybe a tad high). A little too big to session, but strong enough to enjoy as a standalone serving.

3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle, shared with Parksy. Medium amber with golden highlights. Aroma is old dirty dishrag, earthy. Thankfully it tastes way better than it smells! Floral hops provide a nice balance to caramel malts, earthy undertones.

[Bottle] Light amber pour with a soapy white head on top. Caramel nose mixes with earthy hops. Sweet and bready taste. Notes of biscuits, grassy hops, toffee and toasted bread. Decent palate for the style. Tasting notes from 11/2011.

2.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
The aroma is dominated by grass and floral smells with a bit of nutty smell mixed in. It is amber with haze present. The carbonation is lively and the head is very fluffy. There is a grassy taste with floral bites that is fairly good. There is a bitter bite on the palate as well.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle. Pours a clear dark copper body under a large frothy off-white head. The nose is light floral hops over a slightly sweet caramel and crystal malt base. The flavor shows a light bitterness level with some floral and citrusy notes. Sweet caramel and toasty maltiness. Fairly short finish with minimal bitterness. Lighter bodied with a bit of cling to the finish. OK, but I wish it were a bit brighter with the hops.

1.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 3/20
Not a fan of this one at all, reminded me of a blend of mellow yellow and sprite without the sweetness.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 15/20
Nice color, light brown and clear. Nice aroma, what you would expect, nothing really unique there. Very fizzy, but kind of a flat taste.

3.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Nice amber color with a thick frothy head. Fruity aroma with lots of hop flavor. Quite bitter for a pale ale. Solid drinkability and a nice overall beer.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Amber golden with good amount of head. Aroma of orange and citrus hops and caramel with some earth. Taste is citrus and malt. This is fairly well balanced with bitterness bordering ipa territory. A good pale ale.
